I was bashing with my Savage last night, and I noticed that it was driving really strange, so I stopped it halfway up the ramp that i had been jumping off of and when I punched it only the front tires where pulling, but when I picked it up off the ground all the tires where spinning. Is this due to my rear rims slipping which is what I am thinking, or is it something much worse?

It was rapidly getting dark when this happened and I didn't have time to look at this last night, so I thought that I would see if anyone could confirm my quick diagnosis, until I can get home and look at it.

Thanks in advance.
Jon

You could have stripped wheel hexes (inside the rim)
The tires could have broken free from the rims
The Center shaft that goes to the rear could be spent
The output gear that goes to that center shaft could be spent
The rear Differential could be spent

You have a few possibilities here.

Go out and run it again to see if you can better identify the problem. One quick thing that helps is to hold the truck to the ground by hand and hit the throttle with the other. If the rear tires break free then the driveline and diff should be good. (the fronts will too and BE CAREFUL!)

You can check the hubs and tires before you take it out.

It sounds like ur rear shaft broke. Ckeck the rims are still glued to the tires.

Christian: If the tire broke free from the rims wouldn't I see the rims spinning inside of the tire? I did look at that when i was spinning the fronts on the ramp and they weren't moving

Team 17: when I looked at the rear drive shafts they appeared to be intact, if they were broken wouldn't they be loose or wouldn't i be able to see the break?

I am not trying to discredit the information you guys gave, I am just trying to look at the big picture.

I'm gonna take an extended lunch, don't tell my boss and go home and get it and look at the things that you both mentioned.

Thanks guys, I will report back when I get the truck and take a look at the things that you mentioned.

Check the hex inside the rims. Diffs too, when they start to go, will act funny. Under load, they wont engage and without load they may work fine. Just keep that in mind.

Hexes first and foremost.

Ok I may have found my problem, The rear tire on the left side of the truck (looking it at from the back) was floppy loose. I did tighten it back down but I haven't had a chance to drive it yet to see if that solves the problem.

i had the same problem, i drove the car with a loose tire, stripped the hex and rim, bought new rim, and hex, fixed the drive problem and the wheel falling off part to!

Easiest way for me to remember is the top of the lug wrench goes forward to tighten (on both sides). All that clock wise/counter clock wise crap just makes me dizzy. Besides, all my clocks are digital.....

Oh yeah, before someone tries to bust me on that one, if you turn the truck upside down, the nut still tightens when you turn the wrench so that the top goes toward the rear of the truck, cause the bottom is still going toward the front when it's upside down.

Forward as in wheels moving forward.

Dont go confusing everyone now!

:mex:

And dont forget about the guy who disasembles it and ends up with one black and one silver on each side hehehehe

No! wasn't me!

Well I tightened the rear wheels, but didn't get a chance to run it last night. The clutch went out on my 1:1 truck and I spent the evening trying to drive out the bolts from the bushing on the crossmember, finally finished that around 10:30pm, I thought that the neighbors wouldn't appreciate me driving my truck around at that point. Hopefully, it won't rain today and I will be able to find out if that was the problem.

Has anyone filled the hexes of the rims with JB weld to fill in the rounded out part? I was talking to my dad about it last night and he suggested that I try that. Just wondering if anyone has done that?

Also, I was looking at some aluminum rims last night, Kinda pricey, but looked nice. Wondered if anyone was using them?
Good hop-up or useless Bling-bling?

in my opinion the aluminum is just bling bling, way to expensive for bashing, the set I like was $210, I would be afraid to run it off road.

stripped rims

I'm the one with the most rim problems. I have been almost every route except alum. I found out thew will bend if you hit a rock and they are heavy. Not to mention the cost, They can be bought from e bay for 70 bucks. The best way to go is to use Hot Bodies . They seem to be the strongest, more than pro line and RPM brand. I even used some 17 mm hub adaptors for the T max but there arn't any good rims out there for those, the ones avalible are not off set enough. They make your track way too wide, and put alot of stress on the control arms. Also when the track is wide you loose turning ability. You gotta check the hub nuts all the time and use lock tight on them

I use both the stock T-Maxx rims and a set of IMEX Jumbo Maxx rims (with the tires to match), and both have held up quite well. I have stripped one stock Savage rim and none of the others. I have a Hyper 21 8-port powering my Savage; so there is plenty of power.

I had a similar problem with mine as well. I thought I lost my clutch, but it turned out to be a stripped hex nut. It would turn all four wheels when I held it in the air, but put it on the ground and the engine would just rev and no movement at all! In fact, it was working on stripping another rim in the process. It looks like the wheel nuts come loose pretty easy on these trucks so I use "blue" locktight, and I haven't had any further problems. I replaced the stock rims with RPM off-set rims and ProLine Bow-Ties. This thing locks in now and all is great now!

The savage wheels are crap. Even mine all the hexes have been stripped. I suggest those RPM's. I did fix it though, epoxy the hexes to the wheels and its fixed. Been running for about two months already!
