which is better? the people who lived in my moms basement finally moved out and my mom is giving me half of it. so now i can offically start tool shopping. i can finally get all the tools i have been wanting with a big worry of loosing them.

the gun will give you more heat, but may burn your electronics if not used properly

the iron will give you more control, but less heat. It really depends on the application.

Hands down, a soldering iron. Weller makes a really nice iron that you can get thru your LHS for around $35, called the "super iron". I have one, and that thing is awesome. I've used it for everything from making batt packs, to soldering motors, to hardwiring (yes, I hardwire... no connectors on my electrics... lost too many races due to a loose connector).

alright cool then. have alot of experience soldering but never bothered buy a good hi quality iron until now. i have used mine for the same reasons as you HeartBreak. jst never had a really good one.

This is the one that I use Danny. Hakko 936

I love it. Works great

Between $70-$100 depending on how good of a shopper you are.

I use the model before that one. I love the Hakko irons. Set the thermostat to the temperature you need and just leave it all day if needed. That's what I do at the track.

A good soldering station is a great lifetime investment in a tool.

i know Eddy. since i will now begin my collection

When it comes to buying things that I will use for a long time I found its cheaper in the long run to buy the best you can afford.

Now that we are on good soldering irons, anyone know any good rescources on learning to solder? i know it is pretty simple and have seen it done, but do not know the specifics.

wait a min eddy are you trying to make someone use the search feature by not posting the link to that iron that is EXACTLY the same as the Haak model and costs less than 50 bucks?!?!?!?!?!?

LOL
I just felt like saying an intelligent behind statement like that.....

just last night i got fed up with my good soldering iron because i lost the screws that hold the tip in. went to the store and picked up a brand new soldering iron for $5! even if this cheapo one breaks, i can use the screws for my better one! lol.
