OK, I know this is just a little off the RC path, but has ayone built a soap box car with their kid or when you were a kid? I am trying to come up with something and think I have a workable plan except for the steering. No foot or rope steering is allowed and it is sugested that no more than 15 degrees steering be built in. If anyone has some plans that I can compare notes with, I would be much obliged.

Use a rod with an s-bend at the end (like on the throttle linkage of your RC car) that hooks onto a steering pushrod. When you turn the rod, the s-bend at the end will move the pushrod.

That seems a little more complicated than what I am looking for. I was thinking of using handle bars and aircraft cable.

Believe it or not the M1 Abrams uses handle bars (called a T-bar) to steer and throttle. So why not use the handle bars?

A little confusion on the rules, they mention a steering wheel but not handle bars. I wonder if I could use sticks for steering, like a Bobcat, that would be the easiest. I would hate to fail inspection leaving my boy to just watch the race.

You'll need more info on the rules. Cable might fall into the same category as rope.
Capooter has the right idea, and I believe that's the way most of them have been set up for many years.
Strictly a mechanical linkage.

I was under the impression that rope steering was just holding a rope tied to the ends of the front axel. I will admit, I need more info on the rules, what they handed out was a little vague.
