Interstingly enough i was just reading up on this myself. As far as one being better than the other, technically they should be completely interchangeable.
Particulary at WOT. The issue is that at anything less than WOT, it is claimed that the slide carburetor with fixed milled face retracting from opposite side of carb throat, creates less disturbance in airflow and therefore better performance than a barrel carb.
You can look into a slide carb with air filter off and see exactly how the air is restricted and where it flows at anything less than full throttle. On a barrel carb however...the barrel has the same size hole as the carb throat but it rotates, limiting how much of the throat lines up with the barrel. air going in a small gap, to full throat sized hole then out small gap is claimed to disturb air sufficiently that it sacrifices power in that throttle range.
