I blew the 3.3 up late last fall and havent monkeyed with it to much since.(been messing with the sport) i personally believe the 3.3 is to much for the slayer. so i have been thinking of putting the 2.5 on it. well i just came across a brand new trx .15 for $30 bucks still in the package. would this be enough to push the slayer around or should i just hold on to the 15 and splurge for the 2.5? thanks A.J.

IMO, there is no such thing as too much power. The Revo-class trucks such as the Slayer can easily handle big block power. The key to driving is throttle control.

As far as the engine goes, I'd say replace it with another 3.3. Traxxas has a trade up program where you can trade the old engine (whatever the condition) for a new engine for a nominal fee.

the 3.3 is perfect for the slayer. It can seem like a tad much but it really moves the truck around nicely and holds a great temp.

adjust your linkage\horn for less travel or epa out some of the servo throw if you want less power.

its not that i want less power, like you said more power is always good, but with the slayers tires being, maybe a 1/3, of the width of the revo tires and wheels it deff lacks traction. ( i have driven my bros slayer alot). i wont be adding wheel adapters of any kind because then its not a true SC truck and it adds more unneeded rotating weight. just thought a 2.5 would be ideal for such a rig. and since i got the motor at such a great deal i just thought about trying it. but didnt know if it was worth the hassle.

I'd say at $30 go for it. If you're just bashing around or racing the less weight and better fuel economy is a great benefit. When I had the Slayer the 3.3 did seem like overkill. Box stock, I think a smaller engine would help even out the handling.

One of the biggest selling points for Traxxas is the speed factor. A commbination of oversized engines and plastic parts to reduce rotating mass equals high top speeds out of the box. BIG RED letters on the front of the box for people to see +50mph!. Traxxas has to be at the top of a list of manufacturers selling replacement and upgraded parts. A great business model but bad for your wallet if you get caught up in the BIGGER, BETTER, FASTER mantra. With a smaller engine you'll probably break fewer drivetrain parts and not have to upgrade them either.

I can't say from experience that the .15 will have enough grunt, but I certainly promote taking a step down from the 3.3.

Aside from power, other things you need to consider/know. The 3.3 is rear exhaust and slide carb vs the .15 with side exhaust and rotary carb. Also the 3.3 starter will not work on the .15.

Racer is right the .15 won't work. It has a had time pushing a tmaxx. The 2.5 is as small as I would go if I was you.
