Neutral dead band setting on radio? Is there any binding in your steering gear when the servo is disconnected? Does the servo make the noise when the servo arm is disconnected?
I don't know about the neutral band setting?

No binding in the steering when servo is disconnected.

I tried to test for the noise with the servo disconnected but because it's intermittent I wasn't able to reproduce the sound at that time without touching the wheel on the transmitter.

Your radio might not have all the fancy adjustable settings.
What radio system are you using?
If the servo is being tugged on by the linkage, its going to try to resist and recenter itself. This hum might be caused from that. Have you reassembled the steering with the radio trim centered?
Is all your wiring uncut, not sliced or frayed anywhere? It needs to be in good shape.
You do need to adjust the end points on the radio so the servo isn't pushing against the locks on your steering. Full left or full right, the servo should stop rather than continue to try and push. This is how they burn out.
Do you have an extra servo to plug in? If it acts the same way while its out of the Slash, I have to think its a receiver or radio (settings) issue.
Is there any chance any of this gear is wet?
