 :whack: UGH! I could smack my boss around! Took the new savage to work today and after getting the 4th tank of fuel ran thru the boss decided he was going to "fine tune" things abit.......needless to say he did a lousy job, as soon as it starts it up to full throttle, he said he adjusted the high and low settings, and messed with the idle screw also.........so after I got home I took the high and low settings to bottom and 4 full turns out which according to the book is what factory seetings should be, but it didn't get any better, so looks like we are going to go see the LHS tomorrow so he can give it a propper tune up. Man I am depressed now lol!

That will teach you to let someone else play with your ride...

Adjusting needles needs to be done in a methodical manner, and typically is done a needle at a time. Messing with them all at once only leads to trouble.

You should leave the tuning of the LSN until you have adjusted your HSN to a "sweet spot". From there minor adjustments to both LSN and HSN will get things even better.

The idle set screw should only be adjusted if the engine fails to idle properly.

Man, I hate that too. Rule number 1, never let someone tune your stuff till they PROVE they can tune their stuff better than you tune yours.

Here's my 2 cents on getting things back to normal. First, pull the filter and reset the idle adjustment screw so that there is a 1mm (roughly) opening when the throttle barrel is all the way in. This is what makes it "idle" so high. Most engines will idle slobbering rich on the low end and the HSN almost all the way out. Once you get the idle screw set, but the filter back on and zip tie it.

Returning the needles to "factory" will achieve this, but you can run the HSN out another couple of turns and it will still idle, though high end most likely won't run due to over rich settings, but this is to get it back in tune.

Once you get it so it idles ok, start tuning the HSN. I hope your engine doesn't have a 3rd needle (stock 21BB does, don't know about the 25). If it does, make sure the top of the MRN is flush with the carb body. Use a razor blade to make sure. Anyway, don't worry about the LSN right now, just adjust the HSN till it will move under it's own power and keep leaning it till it will run at almost max RPM. Then start tuning the LSN so that it will idle for about 5 to 10 seconds and not bog down when you nail the gas. When you're tuning the LSN, be sure to richen the HSN a tad if you lean the LSN, and vice versa. Once you get it so that there is very little hesitation when you nail it, start fine tuning the HSN with a temp gun, and do not touch the LSN or the MRN again. For that matter, NEVER touch the MRN, EVER. The LSN will need some tweaking from time to time, and the HSN will all the time (day to day), but you should be back to where ya were before the "expert" got a hold of it.

Don't let this get you down, the above procedure should take a tank or two and it's not that big of a deal, just a pain in the rear.

Whitt...

I think he said that it doesn't idle. One speed only, WOT as soon as it fires up.

I understand that Whitt. I was commenting that it should not have been messed with in the first place (ie don't fix what isn't broken).

Regardless, you covered the idle set screw in enough detail that he should be able to fix it...and then use my advice..."only adjusted if the engine fails to idle properly."

I never let anyone touch my settings, no matter how much "experience" they have. Even with automotive experience! My dad tried that one time with my car and really messed it up. Don't get me wrong, he's great with a car but he never tried tuning a nitro engine.

When I got everything back to factory, I had to retune anyway, just because the temps really dropped here in NYC. He did give me a good tip though, hard to explain but he said you have to "listen to the engine" and make sure it's running in a sweet spot then do the final adjustments with temp gun in hand. Worked for me and now it's running perfect. A little rich in the begining, by mid tank temps run in the 220 range then when it's starting to lean out because it's running low on fuel it's hitting about 240-252.

Lesson learned, tell them to keep their mits off your car!

Thanks for the advise guys, my initial plan was just to wow the boss with my new ride and try to get him to buy one of his own, but then all this happened, I spoke with my LHS and he said not to worry just bring in the ride and he would get it set up for me, and explain to me what is being done while he is doing it ( kind of a learning experience) since I'm totally new with nitro it's easier for me to watch and learn as opposed to the old trial and error bit. I'm sure once I actually see what is being done and all then it will be easier for me to grasp it, basically I just don't want to fudge things up to the point that I have to buy a new engine so soon, that would just be my luck. Hopefully I can get around to doing some all out running with it tomorrow, I'll be sure to let you all know how it turns out, thaks again!

i am so picky with my truck, the only person besides myself that can touch it is........ ME. i hate other people messing with my needles.

Sorry, point taken.

 Man ya know I just can't help but to feel like a retard, I knew I shouldn't have left it at work unattended! Another valuable lesson in the life of Nitro eh!?

BTW can any of you suggest any good reading for a newbie such as myself as far as good tips and so forth? I mean other than the forums here, like any magazines or books concerning the Nitro R/C world?

check out the Ultimate Nitro Tuning Guide. I hear it has the best tips on nitro engine anywhere
