The RPM skids are great. They're plastic, but they protect a lot of the underside. And they have a no break warranty with you just can't beat. I recommend them highly.
The aluminum ones can bend on a hard impact but usally can be bent back, Rc Solutions makes some extremely tuff skids, I believe they are steel but not sure. As far as plastic ones Rpm makes some very tuff skids that will take a major beating and they have a life time warranty. If you really want something that is bullet proof you might check out some Titanium skids, exspensive and heavy but worth the money imo.
RC-Solutions skids are the best. They are made of spring steel. Don't get me wrong, they will bend if you hit something that doesn't move, but their fairly cheap and bend back.
I actually mounted a rubber grommet behind them. I tested the setup by hitting a concrete wall at 3/4 throttle... it would just bounce off. I let off the gas a few feet before the wall, but still, it was in second gear when it hit.
I had aluminum bulks though too... not so sure I'd try that with stock.
Here's a pic so you can see the grommet:
I just went the the hardware store and found rubber grommets. Drilled a hole in it and used the GH bulkhead brace. The brace had a perfect hole in the center to do this with.
That's why there's extra space. It's an extended chassis. And, it's so changed around that I have the receiver above the steering servo so I could put the fuel tank where the receiver was and put the throttle servo at a different angle the XTM intended when they made the conversion. They had it so close to the spur that two of the servo's mounting screws where covered up underneath with the chassis rail. Which meant you had to take half the truck apart to replace a spur gear... very big suck.
I agree with the RCS skids. They are just awesome. If you can't get ahold of those, check out the HCR Titanium skids. Those are almost as good, but more expensive... lol
I had RPM Plates on my Maxx, they were great. No problems with bending, they are very thick and last forever and you can't go wrong with $20 for a rear, front and center plate. plus they are RPM so if they break you get replacments

I didn't like them. The front one dug into the ground on landings and ripped my screws out of my bulks. Once it actually destroyed an aluminum bulk by snapping a screw off in them. The one for the rear was ok, but after my screw issues, I tossed the front one.
