Hello everyone. I'm hoping someone can answer this question for me. I have a Torq .21 with pull start. I'm wanting to install a shaft starter on it in place of that pesky pull rope. What I want to know is, can you start these motors safely with a battery powered drill or screwdriver? I really am not interested in paying $75 for a roto starter, if it's just a glorified drill. My LHS says no, but I think he just wants to sell me a starting system.

When I had a rotostart on my old motor, all I used was my drill, worked great! Your drill just needs to be fast enough to turn the motor fast enough for it to fire. Most drills have speeds, high and low.

Awesome. That's what I thought. 18V Dewalt is gonna be the way to go then. Thanks!

Unless you already own one, I wouldnt spend the money on one unless you can justify using it elsewhere. DeWalt makes a great drill, trust me. I own an 18v xrp. But that kind of money is a lot just to use it for a rig starter.

18V XRP, check. numerous other POS drills still clinging to life, check. I've got that end covered, for sure!

I would suggest setting the drill on screw mode and set the clutch on it so you can stop it by hand pressure, that way if there is a bind in the engine for some reason, you dont use the drill to just power through it.

i use a milwaukee 18v cordless scet on screw mode with clutch set around 15 to 18, its enough to spin engine but not enough to break something if there happens to be a bind in it for anyreason

I thought about that. Tearing something up was my main concern, but once the motor starts, the one-way nut prevents any damage if the drill is still in the hex slot, correct?

Ok. the shaft starter kicks A**! No more knuckle busting on the head or shock tower! 18V Dewalt Charger keeps the batteries charged! It's a good day folks. Now, does anyone know if there is a shaft starter for a pro .15?

For the traxxas pro 15? not sure..but i got one for my dynamite mach1 .15 its awesome. by looks of things, it would fit the traxxas if your 15 already has a pull string.. just try it...tiger drive sells em for like what..18 bucks i think?
