SH 28 Savage Gearing... what do you have and what do you do?

Just curious what you guys are running with a standard savage (normal length/height) savage and a SH 28, STS 28, wasp 28... A decent BB.

I've been running an OS 21 RG since I got the savage from skymaxx a few years ago. I just recently bought a SH 28 off a guy for $30. Other than the head being on wrong and missing the head shim, it runs great (after fixing those things of course).

More power than I've ever had, starts easy, runs relatively smooth but man, power power power! On grass/pavement, the front will not stay down unless I really feather the throttle. I know this is hard on my drive-line, but it's still cool.

Since I've only had the 21 RG (relatively low power, but reliable), I don't have gearing other than low 52/14. I did find a 15T bell, but it's still rediculously low for that engine.

I wouldn't mind a bit more speed, but I do only bash, no racing. I primarily want to gear up to save the diffs/trans/axles as much as I can, but still enjoy some decent power. Any input you guys can give will be appreciated. Are there any issues you have running higher gearing? Keep in mind, I've had the same spur/cb for 16 gallons... I have a feeling gearing taller is going to make things a bit hot and may burn spurs or shoes. Let me know.

when i had the stock 25 engine i ran a 49t spur & 14t cb............i upgraded to the wasp 28 runing a 52t spur & 14t cb...........changed to a adjustable werks clutch too..........i have loads more of power & the same speed as the 25 had at half throttle...........I'm also running 40 series weld racing beadlocks which make my tires about 1/4in larger than the stock ones............may lateron go to a 50t spur but no smaller.........one of the tracks i race at i need more power than speed on the steep climbs..........
 
14/52? That's what you run with the 28? Wow... Mine wouldn't even be drivable if I dropped another tooth on the CB. I was thinking I might go 49/16 just to keep the front end down.
 
well I run mine at 15/49 because I like the wheelies and stuff (STS .28) But I know that 18/49 and 17/47 are both popular. Still some wheelies, but not much.
 
Olds, try dropping down on the spur a bit too. They have a 49 and a 47 spur gear. Not sure about the mesh. Maybe the other guys could help.

You are running the stock gearing that was in the Savage .21.

Just looked at mine. It's 47/15. Just a ported S-25 in it.

I run a Picco .28 with 18/49 and its somewhat controllable lol, I would like to gear it even higher but there aren't any other options for spurs for the X yet.

Olds, you may want to try 17/47 with the Sh .28. Thats the stock gearing on the 4.6 savage and I think that would work pretty good for you.

Any of you running taller gearing having a hard time keeping the spur from melting or the clutch from frying?
 
So far my spur has held up, and I am running aluminum clutch shoes so they have been fine.
 
i would try 18/49, i run it w/ a discontinued Picco .27. not too nice on the rest of the drivetrain but no matter what you do the BBs will all abuse the driveline. If the 18/49 turns out a little better but you are still killing other parts try 17/49 w/ the savvy locked into 2nd gear...try it...it works.
