I just ordered an HPI Nitro MT2 18SS kit, and was wondering what servos and radio would be a good start. This is my first nitro car and I'm just trying to get your opinions. I was looking at the Futaba 2PL, but i know nothing about servos. Also what else would I need to get started (besides fuel I guess)?

Also, not looking to spend over $100 on the servos and radio.

Thanks in advance

The 2PL is a great radio. It's what I use, but I'd reccomend stepping up to an FM system if you can afford it. As for servos, I'd reccomend a hitec 645MG ($40) it's a high-torque, metal-geared servo, that's reliable and all.

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXENN3**&P=0 -get that version of the 2PL (the one w/ 1 S3003 servo) so that way you have at least a throttle servo

And when you order your radio, MAKE SURE you order the 75 mhz freq. band one. Because 27 mhz only has 6 frequencies to choose from,, whereas 75 has 30...

for steering servo i would go with a hitec 645 its metal geared and could use the s3003 if you want to stay cheap. at least that my setup. rctire got them on here on sale check his thread out. for the radio that is the one i just bought and waiting for it.

I ran the 645MG for both throttle/brake and steering. I like having a high torque servo for brakes. On an off road rig, your t/b servo gets just about as much of a workout as the steering servo. Save money and headaches of burning out standard plastic servos and go with high torque metal geared right from the start.

Ya, I agree w/ olds, but it's not entirely necessary if you don't want to/can't spend that much money at first, but it is definately a reccomended upgrade that you step-up to a 625MG later on for T/B dutie (still $40, but faster, w/ a little less torque than the 645; in otherwords, perfect for throttle/brake duties..)

I use an MX-A kit. It came with servos and everything. You can change those when you feel like it. I paid $100 for it.

Cool. I hit up my nearest hobby shop and they hooked me up with a 2PL with one standard servo and one Hitek 645MG for about 104.00. What else would I need to get started once I assemble the kit?

First off i would like to say hello to everyone this is my first post here in the universe
second i just got a nitro MT2 18ss and I'm looking for the radio parts I'm kinda new to all this building your own kit so
do most standard servo fit in to this car?
between futaba and airtronics is there that much diff.
and with servos does having metal gears help all that much
i hope i have not asked to many questions and i look forward to becoming a part of the universe thanks a lot in advance

Welcome to RCNT! You'll like it here....

What are you looking to spend on radio gear would be the first question?

You can get a good radio from one of our members here. Send Mr. T-maxx a pm and he can hook you up with a fm radio made by jr.

The main reason for metal gears is for durability. plastic geared servos' tend to strip gears.

I hope you dont think this is RCU... This is RCNT... IT is was better than rc universe. Here, we are like a community. Everyone helps eachother and most get along. Please if you havent already done so, read the rules over. Also, try using the search to help find info before starting a new thread.

By the way, WELCOME TO RCNT!!!

I'm sorry about that did not mean to put that on these forums i hope that it does not taint my name :) and once again I'm sorry

Well I'm looking to spend maybee 200$ for all my electronics and radio i hope i can get some good stuff for that price

You can get a airtronics mx3 for $100. Combine that with a hitec 645MG for steering ($40) and a hitec 625MG for throttle/brake ($40) and your under your limit.

But you will also need a servo saver I think for the steering. Even though the servo's I listed are metal geared, that just means they are stronger, not bulletproof, so servo savers are still needed.

Radio: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCHA8**&P=ML
645mg: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXUZ89&P=ML
625MG: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXUZ87&P=ML

The 645mg is a higher torque servo that is good for steering. Fast enough for most people and definitly strong enough for the MT2. The 625MG is a higher speed servo, which makes for faster throttle action.

This is the saver I was talking about for the steering servo:

The difference between most brands of servo's is the size/spline count on the output shaft. I believe some are also wired different, so you have to be careful.

The servo's and radio I listed are what I had in my HPI Nitro MT (the MT2 predecessor) and the worked well in that truck.

None of this equipment is TOP shelf, but it's also not bottom shelf either. The radio has a nice feel and layout to the screen that's on it. The servo's last quite a while as long as you plasticoat them to keep water out. I've had good and bad luck with hitec servo's, but I'm pretty certain it's because of user error.

Long story short, I had a hitec 625mg in my t-maxx for steering. I thought it was a 645mg like the box said. I was in such a hurry to install it that I didn't read the sticker on the servo itself... it only lasted about a gallon, then the board smoked. It didn't have enough torque to do the steering job. But, as a throttle servo, I've gotten many gallons through them before they get twitchy or just worn.

Good luck and remember, most questions aren't necessarily stupid...

I would, perhaps, also recommend a 5 cell receiver battery (I think the hump style will fit). You will also need a charger for it. I use a charger that comes with the traxxas Revo truck (tower hobbies for around $30, I think)

You can also get these chargers from Ebay, for a lot less. i paid $15 for mine through an ebay auction. (new in box).
The 5 cell rx pack is a 6 volt battery. Makes the servo faster, and more powerful, if it's designed for it.
here is a link to a 5 cell HPI RX battery:

hope this helps!
