Hi my name is Charles and I am new to the rc community. For my first build I am making a hybrid catamaran/air boat, powered by an e.d.f.

My question is about the lenght of the horn l on the servo and the rudder.

Here is my understanding: longer horn on servo=more travel but less force.
longer horn on the rudder = less travel and more force.

so using a short horn on the servo and a long horn on the rudder would give me the least amount of travel but the greatest force.

Are my assumptions correct ?

Thanks

Yes. Don't know much about boats but in cars it's ideal to have the same length of horn and the sticky-out-thingy on the steering rack so they move in parallel. I guess it keeps the steering linear. Not sure if it applies to boats.

Thanks for your response nono

In my experience you want as much throw on the rudder as possible. I lost a sailboat due to lack of rudder. It just couldn't overcome the wind. Long horn will require a high torque servo as it is under a lot of load. Got any pictures? Sounds interesting.

Uhhh... That's a winch servo, a whole other thing. They turn indefinitely (aka don't have 120 or 180 or whatever degrees of motion). You need a standard surface servo. Hitec is a good brand otherwise.

*Edit: it has 3.5 full turns of motion so not infinite like a crawler winch but still not what you need :)

My mistake. Thought he was building a sailing catamaran. My regrets for "steering " in the wrong direction. Apologies.
