I was running my Savage X today for about 3 tanks then put it away because it was afternoon and the hottest part of the day. I took it out now went like 400ft with it and it stopped but was still reving when i hit the throttle. At first I thought it was my linkage, ie: drive shafts, difs, ect. I checked all of them and they were fine. I set the car down and saw that the spur gear was melted. I want to get a metal spur so it cannot melt, is this a good idea. Could this be that the clutch bell is getting too hot or is my spur gear actually stripped.

-Thanks

pictures would help determine better, however it may be an issue with your gear mesh, if your gonna replace the spur id go ahead and get a metal one but make sure the mesh is set right.

This is a new savage so I didn't change the mesh so if it is the mesh I would talk to hpi. Unfortunatly, I cannot get a picture because my camera has a low resolution.

Mesh can easily change due to CB bearings going out, engine mount sliding, cracked or a engine mount. It doesn't necessarily mean you set the mesh wrong or that it was set wrong in the first place. Engine mount screws are screws you should check pretty frequently for tightness. A single hard roof landing can slide the mount or crack it.

Or, like I said, the CB bearings could also have died on you which will allow your mesh to get messed up.

Going with a steel spur means you will be moving any driveline stress relief elsewhere in the drive line. Spurs are cheap and easy to change. Diff gears and axles aren't that cheap and aren't that easy to change. I'd check for other issues before getting a metal one.

Just because it's new doesn't mean it was right. Did you check to see if the engine mount bolts came loose?

I have a 48 tooth steel spur for sale cheap here if you want it. $10 shipped. Remember that you will need a hardened clutchbell with a steel spur gear.

I don't believe it will hold up to a steel spur. I ran a stock HPI bell with a steel spur once, lasted one tank. Not on a savage, but none the less, still destroyed.

OFNA's hardened bells hold up really well.

EDIT:
Took a look at the manual for the savage X and XL. The XL runs a steel spur and it appears the X and XL run the same type of CB. It's HPI's "race" CB. Doesn't really say it's hardened, but I can't imagine HPI including a bell on the XL with a steel spur that won't hold up for a while. You may be fine if yours is the X.

the stock cb for the savage is not hardened, the racing one with the lil holes in it that is the one you want, i have the stock cb that met the steal spur if you would like pics of what will happen lol

This is a HPI 18T standard bell I tried running on my t-maxx with a 1M RC Solutions steel spur:

Lasted less than one tank and that's not a lie! It was a brand new spur, and yes, I know how to mesh. Made a spectacular spray of sparks when it went.

seems like a memory. I can just picture that, sparks spraying while driving down the street. sorry about the damage though.

Been there myself, unless the clutchbell packaging specifically says hardened steel, don't use a metal spur. Stock X CB's are not hardened.
Word of advice; find out why the CB is getting so hot it melts the spur teeth.
It's time for a new clutch more than likely. aluminum shoes run much cooler than the carbon/teflon HPI shoes. Use a 1.0 spring and any al. clutch shoe that will fit.
Integy makes an inexpensive cluch shoe/spring combo that holds up very well. They'll last an easy 3 gallons with proper care. Whenenver you install new CB bearings they fling the excess grease out, and it goes all over the shoes causing heat, slippage and premature wear. If you have access to a compressor blow the excess grease out of new bearings before installing them. If you don't have access to a compressor, Install the bearings and run the truck for one tank. Remove the engine and CB. Wipe off all the grease from the inside of the CB and shoes. Reinstall everything and you should not have any problems for a long time.

Something have to break - Why not the spur gear and not the tranny. Been there...

Integy? :OMG:

YEP! Their clutches are actually good, so are their hubs for the Savage and Revo.
Their front al. hubs for the Savage allow for a ton of steering throw. So much you have to switch to a CVD in front otherwise they eject the driveshafts at full lock.
Now their A-arms, shock towers.....bling garbage!

Well I happen to have an Integy clutch for a Savage,I guess that'll be going on there for the bash. More steering throw, looks like I'll be getting some of those hubs too. Thanks for the good info Scrogg!
