I got a new motor back from HPI. Only thing is they didn't tell me it wasn't broken in. I've been running it for about two tanks. Had alot of full throttle in there. Only good part I guess is most of the time it wasn't for very far 20-30 yards on first two tanks. Most of this last one was wide open for a longer distance maybe 50 yards 5 seconds. But just about all the time I would go full throttle trying to warm it up to get a good tune which I wasn't able to get. My temps never got over 230 degrees. Where should I go from here?

First, there is no such thing as a brand new engine that has already been broken in. You need to know this.

Your best bet, grab the manual and start the break-in from the beginning before you do anything else.

No major rc manufacturer will ever send you a broke in engine, that part is up to you. The damage may already have been done to your motor, your best bet is to run it until it blows.

Well it'd of been nice if they'd(HPI) of told me it was a new eninge. No paper work sticker on motor or anything. What I was told is they ran about a 1/4 of a tank through it to make sure it would run. It was up to me to find out they replaced the motor. Because they send paper work out from time to time not on every repair or order though just some of them...Always like a invoice with what I order or what they've done. Didn't get that. A HPI guy called me hours before they shipped it not once did he mention that it was a new engine. When I asked him about the cooling head he said there was nothing they could do. Had a very minor ding on it from after I sent it to them the 1st time.

My point is that they sent the motor to me new with out telling me or including anything to indicate that it was new. I had a phone conversation with the guy from HPI didn't say anything about it being a new motor. If I'd of know it was new I wouldn't of had a problem with breaking it in. Its just the fact they didn't say anything and I most likely ruined a new motor for no reason other than lack of communication on HPI's part.

That does kinda suck but even I would've assumed it was an engine that was broke in. On my 5.9 after the repair they told me they did one tank of break in and the rest was up to me. Maybe I got the more dedicated employee who told me. If I were you I would right down the engine serial number on the bottom of the block and tell them that if your engine fails, you would like a new one on warrenty from the day you received this engine, not from when you originally purchased the truck. I hope this helps and let us know if they do anything about your situation.

Ya It'd of been nice to have been told that. I'd of broke it in from the start scrapped there 1/4 1/2 a tank. I'm sending it back to them. Ill write down the serial numbers this time and see what it comes back with. Took it apart and sleeve is warped so see what they do. Anyone wana trade a XL for a XXL? Really wishing I'd of tried Losi & not HPI or not sent my truck to hpi to begin with.

This is a great method and the one I use and recommend. It's also a sticky in the motor and engine section here:

It sounds like it'd work just wish I'd of know about that before I started it once I got it. I'm still going to send it back to them been since January so whats another 3 weeks?

I'm with mudslinger on this, I never would've assumed an engine was broke in if it just came from the manfacturer. I'm very interested to see if they actually warranty this engine for you.

Would have been different if they'd of told me hey we replaced your engine. Wouldnt of thought it was broke in. Never said anything and I talked to the guy that was doing repairs right before he shipped it. Wondering what they'll do to as the cylinder was warped.
