I just got a Savage XL this Saturday and by Sunday the OWB is slipping or damage. I read that some people change the back plate of the savage x onto the XL Are this parts interchangable can it be done? I did some research on the parts needed and this is what I came out. and if it is possible does it need any other modification?

Starting shaft 1432
Cover plate 1426
O' ring 1425
OWB 1430

I've heard of some people change their OWB to a different one from a different engine. Apparently there is something wrong with the design of the OWB in the 5.9. If it's a fairly new engine, it may just be the oil from being rich from break-in. Try spraying it with WD-40 and try it again. If it still slips, you can try contacting HPI or just trying to do it with a different OWB.

THe OWB's on these engines are failing becasue the engine is such a big displacement and tightly pinched.
HPI should have noted in the owner's manual to loosen the glow plug and preheat the engine during breakin to stop from damaging the OWB. This applys to alll nitro engines actually.
Once the engine breaks in, the starting process is not as harsh on the OWB. This is because all the extra friction between the piston and sleeve is gone.

^^+1 on all the above. Even my wimpy little .25 would eat one way's without loosening the glow plug. I learned the hard way, but HPI will send you out a new one promptly though.

I took mine out and sprayed it with break parts cleaner and the shaft too. Put it back together and so far so good.
