Hello everyone, I'm a new to this site, and have been out the game a little while. I'm gonna get a nitro mt soon. I've read some of the threads and it looks like for what I want to do more people say savage than anything else. I break things, jump, crash, go fast and love every second of it. My last rc was an e-ruslter brushless with the mamba max, and lipo, I broke every part of that truck more than once, it was great, but I'm gonna go nitro this time. So I think I will give the savage a shot. I'm just wondering which way to go. The rtr, the kit, or the xl? I like the bigger engine in the xl, but what are the pros and cons of that setup and is it worth the $? Does the kit have any advantages? Or since I need everything is the rtr the way to go? Right on, thank you all who have input. It's appreciated!

I would get the rtr. Axial is the engine supplier for the k5.9 and the k4.6 and I have not heard terrible things about Axial. Ofna supplies the F4.6 and for being a rtr motor it definitely had some punch.

Or you could get the either the xss or xl, and sell the motor on fleabay and get a motor like a picco or an lrp. Both are great motors.

If I were to buy one, it would be the XL.

I've owned two savage trucks so far. One was 21 length (like the X), the other came with 1" extended TVP's. That extra inch makes things easier to work on and makes it handle much better in general for bashing. The XL is roughly an inch longer than the X.

i would go with the savage xl i have a savage x and i dont like it thaat much i have had so many problems with it so the xl would be my choice:D

if you want a ready to run then go with an xl. if you want to assemble it then go with then kit.

the kit offers some upgraded parts like hardened steel spur and vented steel clutchbell, hd dog bones all around and diffs i believe. the thing is you need to add radio gear and servos.

i went with the kit and love it. my wife has the x rtr and its perfect for her cuz all she wanted to do is play with it out of the box.

The XL is the way to go. It already has all the upgraded parts especially where they count. The motor is a hit and a miss but for the most part it's a good strong overall truck. Terry

Thank you everyone very much!
Divey, what do you mean hit and miss?

Hey Olds, I've seen a few of your post in other threads. In your opinion is the savage even the way to go? I'm very hard on my stuff, everything always breaks, how are parts and customer service with hpi? Is there another rig you would suggest?

i have ordered 2 things from hpi for the savage steel brakes... wrong size yet it says a direct replacment for hpi savage x and a body which my fault i didnt read it was clear but the pic showed it painted so i spent 30 bucks on a clear mold that i have to cut out and paint

Thank you everyone very much!

People have had many problems with the 5.9 with it not running right. It almost takes a gallon for break in to get full performance. Most people will by the kit then pull the motor and sell it. Then go out and put that money towars a better motor. My 5.9 has just over a gallon through it and now I have to replace the con rod. Hope this helps. Terry

the savages are great trucks but its true the 5.9 has had its share of problems but never be afraid to go with a savage there still awsome lol

Thank you everyone very much!

If bashing, durability and ride height are your goals, then the savage is probably the best for you. The only thing that I have found more durable is a good 1/8 buggy, but ground clearance isn't high enough for typical grass running. Causes a lot of drag since the chassis has to plow through it.

I've had 2 1/8 buggies in the past and both were tough as nails. Countless endo's, bad wrecks, cartwheels and rarely did the day end due to a busted part.

But, since 99% of my running is in grass... I didn't run them a lot. That said... I should have kept the last one because with street tires, it was a blast at the skate park. I traded it to a guy for my current savage, if that tells you anything! ;)

Personally, I'd go with the 5.9 due to the upgrades and stretched chassis. If the engine gives you fits, there are quite a few quality engines out there under $200 that will work great in a savage.
