if the throttle is wide open and i roll the truck, no noise. if the brake is applied (brakes are aluminum) there is a crackling clackity noise. sorry, best i can describe it. is this normal?

the brakes dont lock, i just wanted to rule out the tranny. if it was the tranny it would do it all the time correct? its a crackling/grinding sound, i dont know if this makes any sense. i installed the motor/spur/clutchbell correctly. its the first savage I've owned, always had tmaxxes. i bought this used and have dont alot of work putting it back together, i will run this weekend (fingers Crossed)

There's a good possibility that it's a bad diff that's making that sound. If the trans were shot, the brakes would still stop the front end.

i took off the skid plates, and both diffs spin freeley, no binding. is seems the problem is only when i apply the brakes, once when i rolled it back (it has no reverse) the real left tire locked after 2 or 3 tire rotations.

If you have the dual steel brake disks, that happens when the disks begin to wear. They wear on the hex that they spin on. This allows them to flop around quite a bit and cause intermittant binding.

Could also be that your dog bones (usually centers) have eaten nice gouges in the cups and when brake pressure is applied, it's causing them to catch in the gouges and pop out and pop as the shaft rotates.

I've had both problems that gave me such sounds and scenarios as yours.

Example of a gouged cup:
My current front center at the trans:

Rear center at the diff:

If I let it go too long, the gouges will catch so bad on the dog bone ears that they will lock in and twist, then snap in half. Had that before as well.
