Hello i just got this thing and its my first nitro its all broken in and tuned right but when i give it full throttle sometimes it slips out of gear and high revs until i let it sit for a few seconds then it kick back in gear again but I'm not sure if this is a tuning problem of if it is a tranny problem.........the thing is awesome except for this one problem that I've noticed so far...Thanks for any answers

Sounds you need to check out the slipper clutch. You may have it glazed over by now but first I try tightening the nut until fully seated the back off 1/4 turn.

You may have to pull it apart and scuff the pads then assemble it and set the adjusment, but try the adjustment first.

Sounds like Racer is on the case as normal. Like he said check your slipper clutch....however there is one other thing that is "could" be, the one way bearing in the tranny that the main drive gear rides on. This is not a normal thing to go out... but it can slip....sometimes people try to do what sounds like a good idea and oil the internal gears of the tranny and the bearing can end up slipping on them. But check the slipper first as was said above by Racer!

still having trouble with slipper

I pulled it all apart and scuffed the pad up with some sand paper but it still slips i tightened the nut all the way down and backed it off some but to no avail still the same problem....i checked the rear diff but everything is fine there....any other suggestions as to what this could be...i do have some new pads coming for it too....does it only have one pad or does it have two pads??

i have had the same problem i took it into my local hobby shop and they said hpi has been having a problem with the one way bering because it is oiled if there is a shop near u then take it down their they cleaned mine and it worked but this is only temperary untill they get the one-way bering in

ok do you know where the one way bearing is located? is it in the tranny or in the diffs? thatnks for your comments

The one in the trans.

A guy at another forum was having issues with his similar to yours. His was with a new 3-speed complete trans he bought from his LHS. Ended up being one of his OWB's in the trans was slipping on him. He tore it apart, cleaned it out with DA really well (denatured alcohol), then it worked fine.

I'd suggest putting at least a drop or two of 3-in-1 oil on it though to lube it. They do need lube, just nothing thick or it makes the rollers stick and not lock on the shaft when they are supposed to.

Is the X a two or 3 speed? Not sure what version you have... HPI has a large variety of savages out these days. Hard to keep up.

Looked at the X-SS manual and it's a two speed, but has the newer split case so you can take the majority of the trans apart without taking it out of the truck, which is nice. I changed my case over just for that purpose.

The bearing is in the yellow circle. The spot/shaft it spins on is in the green circle. Soak the bearing in DA and stick a DA soaked paper towel through it and spin the bearing on it in both directions to work out the grease/gunk in it. Clean the shaft it spins on with DA as well. Put 2-3 drops of 3-in-1 in the bearing and throw it all back together.

Hopefully this is your problem.

thanks for the illustration and good advice I'm prolly gonna tear it up in the morning or sometime tomorrow ill let you know if that was it or not

where would i find the denatured alcohol at and to answer your question i have the two speed transmission...

Any store that sells household paint. It's usually in the area where paint thinner is. It's in a square tin can like paint thinner, mineral spirits, naptha, etc. Labeled as "Denatured Alcohol".

Well i wasn't able to get ahold of any denatured alcohol but i did clean the OWB out good and re oiled it w/3 in one and the truck is up and running great.....So thank you to everyone that gave me advice on this..:)

Glad to hear you got it going.

You can use rubbing alcohol, but it's got water in it I believe. The DA stuff doesn't. Works great as a general de-oiler and de-greaser.

I know that this isn't answering your question but I thought I should warn you anyway. If you use a rotostart be careful. My dad just got his old savage running with a 25 on it. He put in a new sleeve and piston so the engine had really good compression. Every time he went to start the truck he would break on of he one ways on himself. So he said fiddlesticks ot and went out, bought a few new ones. We decided to go to this sod farm near our house with my uncle who just bought a new nitrous buggy on Saturday. Let me tell you hos thing rips. I don't know if you heard of it but he has the hot bodies chassie extend and huge wheeled. The hot bodies engine that came with it he destroyed when trying to start it. Note this is a five horsepower 64 big block. So anyway the first pull and the fifteen dollar one way literally cracked in half. He got the expensive one thinking it would last longer. So just a little warning, if he rotostart/pullstart is slipping, check the herring.
