Hello All,

First of all thanks for taking the time to read this. It seems that I am having a problem with my Savage and would like some advice. I got it last week and broke it in the engine. So far I have put about 1/2 gallon through it and haven't really pushed it yet. I went to run it in the back yard last night. I started it up and mashed the throttle but the truck barely moved. The engine revved up but not much else. I took off the body and watched it as I opened the throttle. The clutchbell spun as did the spur but not any forward motion. I shut it off and pushed the spur gear by hand. It didn't slip and the truck started to roll forward a bit then clicked and lost forward motion. I tried it a few more times with the same results.

I know I read about this symptom somewhere else but can't seem to find it again. Should I start by looking at the diffs or should I be looking in the tranny? Any advice is appreciated. Also, I noticed on earlier runs that after the fuel is almost gone the truck doesn't want to accelerate like it used to. It seems like the clutch isn't engagine properly. However, I think this is a separate issue.

Thanks,
Ron

So the break in was done properly? How is your Slipper? Does it seem to rev high when you give it gas? YOur gas issue could be causing a problem. You may be too lean on your HSN. Give us more details. I am leaning towards the Slipper.

I bought it used but went through the breakin procedures in the manual anyway. If I give it gas it revs up but doesn't move much. When I was running it the day before it was running pretty quick on the street and shifting like I imagine it should. I haven't received my temp gun yet so I don't know how hot it's running but I tried the spit test and it didn't even boil off. So, I believe I am still running pretty rich. It's just started acting like I would imagine a loose slipper clutch would act. The symptoms seem almos the same from back in my oldschool electric days but when I hold pressure on the wheels and turn the spur by hand it moves forward a bit, clicks, and seems to lose all forward force. It doesn't seem like the slipper is slipping in this case but something internal is letting loose.

could be a stripped wheel.. or a diff.. when it clicks try to keep turning it to see if its lost all forware movement or just has slack in it befor it catches again.. could be a tranny problem since you got it used theres no telling what it went through. all you can do is pull it apart and have a looksee.. if all is good at least you know its not the trans..

your clutch could be stuck, I had simalar issue's but I took off the CB(clutch bell) and one of the shoes was stuck and was not engaging all the way and it was keeping the other shoes down,

also what temps are you running

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am planning on stripping it down to investigate as well as learn more about how its built. The truck was very clean (looked brand new) when I got it but who knows what could have happened to it. I do have one stripped out wheel but I made a temporary fix while I was waiting for new wheels. I don't know what temps I am running but I think my temp gun should be here today.

When it clicks it loses forward movement then catches again. While I have it apart I might change out the clutch shoes. I have read a lot of people like the Mugen carbons so I will probably go with those. Are they a direct fit or will I need a new flywheel and nut?

Thanks again for helping,
Ron

During your teardown, check to see that you have the 4 Spider Diff mod in front & rear. You should also pull your spur gear off and chack the slipper pad for wear. I pulled mine off after one weekend of running, & found my slipper pad basically gone.. Also check your CVD's for binding in the cups. Good luck, & let us know what you find..

Will do ImBroken. I won't be able to really dig into it until next weekend now but thanks for the advice.

Great advice, I had the chance to run my savage yesterday and the same symptom happened to me, gas but struggled to move. I checked one of my dogbones and it was just slightly bent. It was enough for it bind and keep the entire truck from wanting to move forward. That could be a part of that clicking sound you are hearing.

Are the driveshafts spinning?

If not then you have a transmission problem.

Grab the spur gear, and roll it backwards. You should really have to hold on tight to that thing to make it slip.

rbmaxxbasher,
When I roll it backwards it clicks but the spur isn't slipping. I am in the process of tearing it down to investigate right now.

Well, always check the simplest thing first. I started to pull screws off the truck and decided to see what it would look like with the new wheels I bought first. When I removed the old wheels I noticed that it looked like my fix for the rounded hub had failed. With the new wheels and hexs in place my truck seemed fine. I fired it up and sure enough that was my problem.

Thanks to everyone for suggestions. Now I need to read up more on how to properly tune my engine.
