Savage SS - X?

For the Savage X SS, its got the HPI K4.6 engine, thats the biggest difference. Its also got heavy duty dogbones and outdrives, and the Dirtbones tires. It has the dual steel brakes and the polished tuned pipe. Plus its in kit form without radio equipment and a clear body.
 
I went to a hobby shoppe today and they has a few Savage KITS in sale.
One was a Savage SS Kit with no mill one was a Savage SS with a Mill and the other was a Savage SS 4.6.

My question is the Newer KITS seem to have an X in them, what is the difference in the new kits with an X and the older ones without? (With and without mill and mill size I understand)
 
You mean it has an X on the bottom of the box, or is it like a new Savage X? Cause I don't think the Savage X is available in a kit yet.

I know the old Savage SS was sold for a little while in kit form with no engine/radio. The were normally sold with the S-25 included.

Then came the Savage SS 4.6 which as the bigger engine, HD drivetrain stuff, dual brakes, dirtbonz etc... then came the Savage X RTR...and a Savage X SS (KIT savage X should be out soon)

I dunno if this helps any haha.
 
If you're seeing kits with a red X on the box, I believe they are second generation kits which included the 4-spider mod and other mods like that. I don't know for sure. My Sav SS 4.6 came with all the mods but I don't remember there being an X on the box.
 
iirc, the red x on the bottom of the box meant that the truck had thread locked screws in the backplate of the engine, where as ones that don't you have to thread lock them before running them.
 
Thanks for jogging my memory Aaron. I do remember there being a problem with the S-25 backplate now that you mention it.
 
Is there any other way to distinguish the 1st and 2nd gen kits?
The two kits I am looking at are SS Kits The first with no mill is going for 235.00 and the 2nd that seems to be the same kit with the mill, (not a 4.6) is 335.00 then there is the 4.6 kit Didn't see the price, it wasn't on sale.

Am I correct in thinking all the 4.6 kits are 2nd gen?

Is there any other differences in the NON 4.6 kits other then 1st gen and 2nd gen to look for?

I have never had an interest in the Savage but for the price my fingers are twitching to build something.
 
Eddy, yes all the 4.6 kits are second gen.

The things that changed from first to second are the 4 spider diffs and the cam type servo saver, but I am pretty sure all the older SS kits are probably first gen units, but I'm not positive. If not those upgrades can be had pretty cheap, probably like 20-25 for the better servo saver and another set of diff gears.
 
I think the only real 2nd generation kit was the 4.6 but I'm not 100% sure about that. The 4.6 kits came with 4 diff mod, cam style servo saver, metal tuned pipe (if included) the 4.6 pipe is smooth and the 25 pipe is ribbed, heavy duty chrome cups and dog bones, dual disk brakes, adjustable upper arms. If it doesn't have these hop ups it's a first generation kit. I'm almost positive that the only difference between the 25 rtr and kit was the rtr had a plastic pipe and the kit had a ribbed pipe.

It lists most of the differences between the two kits and the X as well.
As I read all the info I could find on HPIs site I found there are more changes on the X then listed so I dont know if the comparison for the kits is complete or not.
 
I noticed on Tower Hobbies the other day that they are taking orders for the Savage X 4.6SS KIT and expect to ship within the month. Not sure what it includes, but thought I'd throw that out there and get my post count up along the way.
