Hi guys thanks for any help,

I have a Savage SS that I bought a few years ago used but in great shape with almost all metal parts, new shocks, etc. I used it off and on for a little while, nothing serious, and when small things broke (and with me going off to college) I basically just let it hang out in my basement. The last time I ran it I noticed a major problem, but then I realized (I thought) it was just the clutch bell gear being worn down to nothing.

I just decided to fix everything on it, found some new problems but got everything patched up, took it out, got it running, but it is hardly getting any power at all and I can't figure out why. Its so weak that I can't get it to drive up a slight hill in the grass, it basically only will move on asphault (up to about 15mph).

The motor is cranking as fast as ever, it just doesn't get to the tires. I'll give it some gas and it will really scream, but somewhere the power is being lost. I have no idea what was wrong and I was actually hoping to sell it after a couple more weeks of running it.

Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I never noticed this before so I don't know if it has to do with the problem or not, but after I stopped running it, the car made a very light 'gargling' sound every few seconds

If the engine revs but it won't move any faster, it's either your slipper clutch that needs to be tightened, or the clutch shoes inside the CB are glazed or worn due to flash rusting inside the bell from sitting.

Okay well on another forum I posted this and they said to tighten the spring on the spur gear which I did and that was the problem for the most part. Started it up and it took off up a tall grass hill pretty well, but there are still some lingering problems...

1) Still seems underpowered from how it used to accelerate... If i just give it full gas it quickly gives a high pitched scream but takes time to get up to speed... maybe I just still didn't have it tight enough but I dunno, seems weaker... but top speed about the same.

2) Breaks are shot... when I squeeze the break it barely slows down, on asphault I can't even get it to come to a complete stop, probably just need new shoes right? No biggie. But...

3) It rolled over at one point (due to high speed and weak breaks before turning) and sat there still spinning the 2 tires that were off the ground... when I picked it back up, the two stopped tires were still stopped, the other two wouldn't stop spinning even with breaks... which makes me think that it could be more of a servo problem than break shoe problem, right? The breaks should be able to stop an idle car that is off the ground.

4) Just little awkward things... When i get it up to near top speed and give it full gas, the throttle sometimes just cuts out. If I release the gas then hit it again it picks back up.

The car may just need some tuning (which I suck at because I don't know exactly what I'm aiming for) but any help on any of those problems would be a huge help, Thanks.

Thanks Rolex thats what the other guys said and the slipper clutch was the problem, or maybe it was half the problem and it could also use new clutch shoes.

It definitely seems to have a problem in that when I floor it the motor sounds like its really running, the thing screams, but the truck doesn't have the kick that it used to, it accelerates much slower (used to do wheelies in the grass)

This thread has been moved to the Savage forum since it had a response.

Your duplicate thread has been deleted.

Apparently you also have a problem in your drive train, and you're only running 2 WD. ALL the wheels should move together or stop together. You need to find out why it's not delivering power to all 4.

Praying for God to fix my truck overnight would be better than me taking about the drivetrain and trying to daignose a problem - I don't know what I would be looking for or anything. Any ideas?

It was the slipper, and my car was running a little lean, and now its running OK but still doesn't have quite the power it should... on road it gets close to old performance, but it doesn't have good acceleration and in the grass it won't go fast... just doesn't have the torque

Was that other forum Savage Central by any chance?

if it was i thought this thread looked familiar.

Did you richen it back up?

set it to factory setting and retune it for performance. that might help you out.

If you ran the truck with a loose slipper, you fried the slipper clutch pad. You need to replace the worn parts. It takes a loose slipper clutch on a Savage about 1 minute to melt everything.
