So I did receive my Savage today. Today I ran it to times. I stopped the second time because the Savage wouldn't move. It would only move when it was at high RPM. Can it be an engine problem, engine clutch problem, slipper clutch problem, stripped gear problem, etc.?

Could it be too loose or too tight? I did have a slipper problem on an electric on-road but I forgot how I fixed it.

sound to me like the slipper backed off. Tighten it just a little bit at a time until it starts going again like normal. If you tighten it all the way and still no forward movement, I would assume that maybe the clutch inside the tranny went. Just a guess though.

There's a clutch inside the transmission?

Should I just change it back to the 2 speed? The seller included the whole 2 speed tranny that he replaced, which was good.

First thing to check is your slipper for sure. If that's tightened all the way and it still won't go at lower rpm then your clutch is the next place to look, but not in the tranny. If your talkin initial takeoff then you want to check the main clutch that's inside the clutch bell (the thing attached to your engine's crankshaft). However, the only thing that could be wrong with the clutch that would cause the truck NOT to move is if the clutch shoes are completely toast (broken). Even if they were badly worn down it would still takeoff, just not as quickly. If the truck simply won't go, it's most likely you're slipper.

Alright, I'll check tomorrow. Thanks for the info.

Also, the seller said that the wheels are suppose to wiggle-jiggle to help cornering, is this true.

Seller said:
You may notice that the wheels seem to have a lot of side to side play, but from what I'm told, this is supposed to be like this. You will notice that it helps a bunch when you corner to let the wheels swivel a little to keep the truck from flipping.

Savage 25 correct? If it's a 2 speed tranny check Part #86087 Clutch Gear Holder with one-way. Not sure what part # it is on the 3 speed tranny's.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. With that one-way bearing being there, it my be slipping on the shaft. Depending on how old the rig is. Much like a OWB on a pull start, eventually it'll chew the shaft away to the point it will either grab occasionally or just completely slip.

Should any of the pro's disagree, by all means correct me. I've been doing ALLOT of tranny work on my Savage 25 all this week, thus it made sense to me when I read this post.

I'm inclined to think either a lose slipper clutch, or your flywheel came loose. Try tightening the slipper; it should be locked down all the way, then literally backed off a 16th of a turn. Doesn't take much.

If the slipper did come loose, search for the "slipper coming lose - the fix" thread.

Next, with the engine not running, hold the spur and try to roll the truck BACKWARDS. It shouldn't want to roll. If it does roll, your first-gear one way bearing is slipping/shot.

If it wasn't the slipper or the one way bearing in the tranny, fire it up and just watch the flywheel. Give it a gentle but short revv of the engine and see if the flywheel and clutch bell move.

Try those three things, and post back.

As for the OWB in the trans, my first (and only one to me) went through 15+ gallons of punishment and I bought it used here on this forum. I believe the new owner has run a few more gallons through it and has of yet to do any trans work.

I'd suspect slipper, loose flywheel nut, worn clutch shoes or stripped wheel hex's.

I'm pretty sure it's the nut being to loose. I'm able to turn the gear while holding the car in the same spot. But I can't do any of this because all the screws are STRIPPED! I'm thinking of doing a major tear down and replacing all the screws with stainless steel ones from Eddy before doing any fixing.

just tighten the slipper and see what happens thers no hex screws in it (not that i know of) just a regualr loc nut

The carb is blocking the way, and I don't have a small wrench that is it's size. I'll probably go check Home Depot. Anybody know what size wrench to get? Thanks!

one question, i have a coupled stripped screws, and how do u plan to get them out to do the rebuild?
