Thanks for the info. I like the lrp .28 but i wish that i could get the truggy version into my truck i want that extra rpm and little bit of power. I do like that .30 to but if the .28 is going to tear up the drive train the .30 must be horrible. I guess i have some deciding to do.

Well, with a solid setup, the savage can take it. I've upgraded both my diffs to XL ring/pinion gears and alloy cups. I've installed alloy diff cases so I could shim properly and know the case isn't going to flex. I also installed new/better bearings to help them last longer.

I run standard black dogbones on the outer and inner axles. I've busted 2 or 3 outer axles, but I think it was more due to my inability to realize a problem. I didn't put fuel line/o-rings in the cups to give the bones a cushion and keep them running centered in the cups, so they would bind and snap at extreme articulation (carthwheeling and hitting a tree for two I remember ;)).

My main issue now is the center diff cups. They start showing wear pretty quick and they aren't any fun to replace. I have spares on a shelf... I just don't have the "want to" to change mine out, but they are pretty worn after 3 gallons or so of use with the LRP28.

It has to be due to either material or alignment. The set on my aftershock have had 13+ gallons through them and they are the original center cvd's and cups! Those gallons were from various engines, but at least 4-5 are from an LRP28S3. The cups show almost no wear, the CVD joints are sloppy though and probably should be replaced, but I don't drive that truck much, it's my "baby" ;).

But geez, 13+ gallons vs 3-4 in a savage? Something is wrong with the setup or materials HPI has. Wish it wasn't so fun to beat the snot out of! :)

okay sweet i think I'm going to just run it and replace things as i go. See how bad i can tear it up.

Hey Olds do you think the drive cups for a Losi will fit a Savage? I just replaced all of mine but with the LRP .30 I am pretty sure they will be wearing even faster now.

I couldn't say. Next time I take it apart, I'll have to check. At least for the front one. The rear may be a lost cause due to the brakes... although, maybe I can use a losi brake disk.

Will have to try some experimenting to see.

I'm with olds97 about the Savage platform not being the best racing platform (although FUN to drive). You're better off racing a Revo over the Savage.
For starters the Savage is one heavy puppy.
The lightest Savage that I have weighs in at about 10 1/2 lbs while I have a big block extended Revo that's about 8 3/4 lbs.
A big difference in inertial mass and the Revo has a more sophisticated suspension to boot.

Concerning engines - I've always been a fan of Novarossi and RB engines. I can't speak for this years RB models (specifically the RT.9 or MT.9), but RB engines are quite often made by Novarossi. I have a TM-928 which other than some cosmetics is identical to a Novarossi N528 or a TOP T528
Novarossi's current line has the PLUS 28-7/RT, the PLUS 28-5/RT, and the PLUS 28-3/RT.
I think the PLUS 28-3/RT is the same as RB's MT.9

Both Novarossi and RB's are somewhat expensive and built for power.
However, if you know how to tune and maintain them (like changing out the front bearing every so often) - they scream like an banshee and still last forever.

Picco makes a reliable and economical engine. I've used their .26 outlaws with some success. Won't give you the high RPM's of a Novarossi or RB. Unmodified I think they peter out around 33,000 - 34,000 RPM's, but you can pick them up for under 150.00 and sometimes under 100.00.

Thanks for the info TGL, I was looking at picco's and some of the LRP's. The RB and Novarassi are a lil out of my price range.

Hmmmm.... you guys are probably waiting for some moron to make some hard cups that won't wear out, aren't you?

Hmmm....seems I remember having this conversation once.... or not....heck if I remember. Has anyone seen a pair of pants around here? So did you ever find out a good price?
