Having alot of trouble with my rear differential in my savage x. The gears inside it seem to be breaking after only 30 minutes of driving every time. The truck seems really out of balance too when I hit the gas hard. The tires seem to wobble pretty bad at high engine speeds, like something is really uneven. I bet thats why I keep killing the gears in my differential. What should I do? I was thinking of going with an upgraded diff, but I dun know. I dont think the cars wheels should be shaking so unevenly when I gas hard. Like when I hold it in the air, and gas, the wheels just seem to go nuts. Any suggestions? help me out!

Have you driven it when it was wet out? Have you put holes in the tires to vent?

I use a dremel with a small drill bit and drill 4 holes in the center of the tires (not the rims). Like on a clock 12, 3, 6 and 9. These holes allow centrifugal force to sling water out of the foams. Be careful though. If there's a lot of water, it will make a mess all over you if you are holding the truck off the ground.

What gears in the diffs are frying on you? The spider gears or the ring/pinion gears?

First the 13 tooth bevel gear went out, but that hasnt happened again. Then the 20 tooth bevel gear went out inside of the piece with the spider gear. Then it went out again. Now something else is wrong inside and I havent taken it apart again yet because I am frusterated. Every time it only takes like 30 min for this to happen, and I'm sick of buying parts for it.

I am taking really big jumps, but I dont think thats why this is happening. I think its because of my problem with this tires shaking and wobbling under a load. I dont think the frame is bent or anything. I dont really know what the deal is tho.

I may try what you were saying about water being in the tires, but I kinda doubt thats it.

Do you think an upgraded diff would help me?

Well, I haven't had a problem with my rear diff since I bought an aluminum diff housing for it. Not the cup, the actual thing that the whole diff rides in. Using an aluminum case allowed me to shim it really well and get the gear lash perfect. With the stock plastic case, the main ring/pinion gears were a bit sloppy. Even with a new case. After a few tanks of running, it would loosen up and get sloppy.

If your tearing up your internal bevel gears, you either have an insane engine or your slipper is a bit tight. Or, you have worn groves in the plastic channels that the spider gear shafts ride in. Most people that run larger engines replace the diff cup with an aluminum one. I haven't needed to and I run a SH 28 with relatively low gearing (15/49).

I'm using an old savage though, not an X, so I don't know what you can do about the diff case itself. I think you can use a diff case for a normal savage. You just have to take half the truck apart when/if it fries on you again.

Do you know who made the aluminum diff case that your talking about? I found one on ebay thats anodized completely blue. I could probably get the whole aluminum holder, and get the metal diff part too. Maybe that will help solve my problem

I also think that the spider gears did make notches in the plastic stock diff part. That may also be part of my problem

I think mine is dynamite. I bought it used and I don't think dynamite makes them anymore.

I just created a thread that has a walkthrough on diff shimming for the savage. I had posted it somewhere else, I thought I had posted it here, but I couldn't find it. The guy used GPM diff cases.

Here's a link to the new thread I just made:

That would have tore up your inner gears.

Are you landing with throttle or brake? I've learned that in a hard way after 3-4 diff gear replacement. Now I land without clutch engage nor breke and I have no more problem with diff gear. I run Savage 4.6ss.

If you are driving with a tight slipper and jumping the savage, it will definitely eat up your slipper or you diffs. You should run the slipper loose. Also are you running with grease or silicone fluid in your diffs?

the X SS diffs are holding up so far in my truck and i beat on them extremely hard.

OS .30 + extended + RWD + 3spd + mid tanked

Well I decided this evening to do some maintenance on my X, I was going to install the aluminum diff cups that came with the truck. Needless to say, the rear pinion gear (13t bevel gear) is missing a few teeth. The ring looks fine though, thats a relief.

The only thing I can contribute to my problem to is pulling wheelies on pavement..........LOL.....its fun riding wheelies but at the cost of the rear diff. If i would loosen my slipper I'm sure it would cure the problem......but no more wheelies........lol oh yea, I'm running everything stock in the RTR version........

I would advise you to loosen the slipper and see how that works for you. I know it will fix my problem.........good luck!

Thanks for the help.

I just ordered new tires with new foam, and a whole new diff housing case, and a whole new metal differential for the rear (the one that comes with the ss x)

If that wont cure my problem, I dunno what will. Oh ya, gunna loosen the slipper more too for added security.

I put all new parts in my other diff, and it still stripped them out today, even faster. like in 10 min. I dont think I had the right grease in it... oh well. This new one will solve my problem, with the new tires and foam.
