Well finally after a week got my savage tuned up just right. Pulls mad air off a vert ramp, runs at a great temp. Has mad speed. Well I go out doing donuts in the gravel. I bring it back onto grass, and it just stopps. I give it gass, and no movement. I give it full throttle, and no movement. Well come to find out all the teeth on my plastic gear that runns off the clutch (Spur gear?) It is the 49t gear. Totally looked melted down.

What could have caused this? How can I prevent this next time (besides getting a metal gear!)? Can I change this geat to a different tooth to get better line response?

sounds like you may have had the spur set too loose, allowing too much slip and causing heat. i run a wasp .26 with my spur almost locked down, i do nothing but jump and still am using the stock plastic 49t spur that came with the truck. make sure your mesh is nice and smooth and that your slipper nut is set like 3/4 turn out from all the way in, that settings has always worked for me. and BTW the wasp .26 on 30% puts out quite a bit more power than the S-25, and my plastic spur holds up fine.

Buy 4 or 5 plastic ones and save yourself the cost of a metal spur gear. The metal spur gear can end up destroying your clutch bell which is a pain to change. First thing to check is are the screws on the bootm holding the engine tight? Next I would check the motor mounts to make sure it has not been cracked or damaged. it also has screws on top, make sure they are also tight. Of course, now you need to replace it so when you put the engine back in, make sure to use a little locktite on the bottom screws. See this thread for complete instrructions on how to replace it.

I should have looked here before I made a thread on almost exactly the same subject in the general nitro forum. :) Some good info here, and I will tighten my gearmesh more this time than I did 2 days ago when I rebuildt it.

Thanks.

Also, if you want serious torque, up the tooth count to a 52.

I run 52/15 gearing on my savage with an OS 21 RG that's on it's last leg and it wheelies easily.

I went through 4 of the plastic spur gears in 3 weeks. All i takes is one little rock to get in there and rip all the teeth off it. I got tired of changing it so i put a robison racing hardened steal bell and spur gear on it. I haven't had any problems with it in 2 months.

I found the culpret. A PEBBLE.!!! ahhhhhhhhh
well got it all chenged up, and was extremely easy. Thanx Buncrana for the link. It helped out bunches. It runs like a beast. But one mroe thing. I dont pull wheelies at all not in grass, or anywhere. I see the front end pull up, but the tires do not come off the ground. I was runnin lean at like 306f but then got skeerd, and richened it back up, and run at 230-250f. no wheelies. n e hints

Slipper to loose, clutch not engaging fully, too high of gearing, weak engine...

Tuning for performance helps, but once you go past the sweet spot rich or lean, you loose power. Run lean, temps climb fast, engine life shortens, flameouts are more frequent and glow plugs burn up. To rich, glow plugs get fowled, engine lasts longer, less power.

What clutch are you using?
