Anyone know of a compatibility list between the two? I noticed a 21 vs X list as a sticky, but curious to know a list for the new rig.

The reason I ask is because I just picked up a couple XL diffs of ebay thinking they would go right in the old school savage. After receiving my first of two... I quickly realized they are significantly different. As usual on ebay, they come with the diff case/bulkhead assembly, so it's not just the pinion/diff.

I bought these thinking they have allow cups and maybe a beefier diff case to keep from messing up mesh like the old savages. I haven't tore my old savage apart yet as I had ordered an alloy diff case as well just at least for the rear diff I shelled out last weekend. I did so with hopes that the innards from the XL diffs would slap right in. After checking tower, they do not say anywhere that they will fit in anything but the X and XL. I just looked at ring/pinion/diff cup parts alone on tower.

Will at least the actual diff assembly/pinion/bearings work or am I completely boned with two diffs I can't use?

yes i put xl diffs into my 25 racer and they are a direct fit. they are completely redisigned but they will drop into place of the old bukheads and diffs. you will get rid off all those little pieces and put in the one big bulk/diff. if you have any probs or dont understand something give me a pm

"all those little pieces"? Little pieces of what?

All I got was this:

i mean on the old bulk head there are two sides and a tie bar and maybe something else if u didnt get the tie bars with it u will need the savage x or xl (samething) and u will need bumper braces. sorry i was wrong in the first post i used my shock towers for my proline shocks but u will need x shock towers also. u will need to take the braces off the bottom of the old diff and install them on the new diff

Any idea if the diff/pinion themselves drop right in the old cases? For $30, I don't feel I got hosed if those parts work. Considering I have an alloy case coming to put it in anyway... it will still be strong and good for nice ring/pinion shimming.

yeah i achaully just bought the cases and put my diffs and pinion in the xl cases yeah they are a direct fit i would just do they 25 to x modd if you could i love the easability of the x diffs it used to take me forever to get to the diff, know it takes a couple minn. but yeah they will be a direct fit

The diff outdrive cups on the xl are hd and use the xl bones which have bigger nubs on the end of the bones as opposed to regular savage bones. They will work but stock bones will have wiggle room possibly stressing the bearings
