If you have the authors consent its fine. Shareware trialware, or music made for free distrabution is fine.

You're only thinking this because those people got busted on Kazaa for sharing too many music files. If you download music from a CD you didn't buy, it's illegal. The exception is the free music FastEddy is talking about where the authors lets anyone download it for free. This is typically only the case for small bands and artists who are trying to get recognized.
