Well the lady has the bug now, so I'm in the market for a decent starter elec. rig for her. She likes the scale of my GT2 but wants more ground clearance. I personally was thinking of getting her a Traxxas Stampede ( http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_44_228/products_id/16231 ) but I need opinions. Budget would be around $200 for the rig. I know that charger, batteries, ect will be an extra cost over and beyond so the $200 is about what I have left after those purchases. Any idea's or opinions for a good starter rig?

Thanks

Isn't the RC10T4 RTR around $240? If it were me, I'd go that route, since it's electric and has a similar appearance to the GT2.

That's true but she wants something with a higher stance. Something like a monster truck but not huge either.

That is a tough one. About the only thing that fits that bill is a Stampede. They come in a brushless trim which would be pretty fast... It'd also roll over very easy.

Aside from that, I'm drawing a blank.

I have bought two really nice stampede's in used, but almost new condition for $85 and $100. That was with all electronics and everything. You can buy a 5000 mah battery for her on ebay for $50, maybe two of them, and still be under the budget.

Funny thing is that I was just looking at those. In fact, I have a question about a vid i just seen. Is this really possible by just changing the battery?!? I just can't seem to fathom he got those kind of speeds from a battery change.

That doesn't seem unlikely considering it's a brushless system, and the last trial is with an 11.1v LiPo which is a full 3+ volts more powerful than the previous 2 trials. That's close to a 50% increase in voltage. Voltage makes that big of a difference as long as the ESC can handle it.

Apparently it's legit. This is directly from the Traxxas website:

The key is the gearing along with the voltage.

One of the magazines did a test on the VXL trucks to see if the numbers were legit in a real world scenario, and they were every bit legit. Just because it's electric doesn't mean it's going to be slow, in fact brushless and LiPo is usually more powerful than nitro, and a lot lighter.

:insert evil grin here: Well if I can keep from breaking my nitro I may have to invest in 2! From what I've seen of the GT2 hop-ups/reviews, I can't even get close to those speeds. can't help myself, I'm a speed freak!

You know what would be a lot of fun for you and the wife, and they're unbelievably cheap, and pretty quick, lots of fun to drive, race, and bash, it the traxxas slash. Ultimate Hobbies had them brand new for $179 with free shipping. The dual rate springs are handling jumps remarkably well.

It's great that you and the lady are getting involved together. I was going to build my girlfriend an E-Maxx, but after buying the HV Pro system for my revo and spending $600 just on the motor and batteries, I wasn't in a hurry to get to hers. Last week, I was in the kitchen cooking, and had my new copy of XRC magazine on my nightstand. She had been watching reality shows when I left. Well a lil while later, here she came with XRC in her hand, OPENED to an aritcle. I was shocked, she was actually reading the material and not just looking at the pictures. Anyway, I was so excited that she was showing that much interest in my RC's that I almost burnt the bread. She pointed to the slash and said, "Baby, could you build me one of these?" Man I was super stoked about it, and needless to say I have two slash's on order. I bought a Novak 6.5 brushless system, used, for $125 that's in excellent shpe. You could also buy a brand new sidewinder system for $120 shipped on ebay. The sidewinder is nice because you can hook it up to the USB port and program everything that you can imagine with throttle and brake curves, voltage cutoff, etc...

The slash is really quick on a 7 cell battery and even quicker on an 8 cell. I think she would be happy with it in stock form for a while, and then later if you want more power and speed you could upgrade to brushless.

Just thought I would share the info since my girlfriend really liked the slash, at least it's something to consider.

I personally was looking at them and have seen allot of great reviews so far. I think they are a great little truck from what I've read about them and I LOVE how well they are modeled after the 1:1's. I'll have to talk it over with her (as she watches over my shoulder making this post, lol.) and see what she thinks. Will get back to you soon. Thanks.

The extra speed came from the extra cell, you can't compare 6 cells to 7 cells, the brand of battery was not what made the speed....Personally I would take Sanyo cells over Venom any day.

You should see one of these things on a 3s lipo, it's a rocket!
