Anyone have tips to running a savage in the summer heat?

I live in Las Vegas so we're getting up above the 90s now. I fixed a few broken parts and tried to start it up. Had to run it really rich for it to stay under 280, but it drowned out the plug and the coil went bad. I run stock on the motor, no upgrades to it. Only thing I've done is put a ribbed pipe on it. I think that is part of the problem because I remember when I put it on, the temperature jumped about 5-10 degrees.

I am going to buy a cold plug to see if that helps. I cleaned the air filter too. Anyone have any other suggestions?

If the outside temperature goes up, so does your engine temps. Your tune does sound out of whack though. It should be screaming at 280F. The pipe is not the problem. Try a cooler plug, a lower oil content fuel. Oil burns hotter than fuel does. Try some O'Donnell's Race 30%, Trinity MHP 30%, Sidewinder Pro 30%, Byron's 30%. All of these fuels will run cooler tuned properly and make a lot more power. You will not shorten the life span of the engine by changing to these fuels.

I don't want to disagree with scrogg, but I had the same issues with that ribbed pipe. Retardedly loud and drove temps up.

Scrogg, do you think he will have to add shims to the head to run 30%? I run 25% so I don't have to mess with shims, just run a bit cooler plug.

I have found that the losi HT pipe from the LST2/XL quiets things down and works well for temps/tune with a wide variety of engines. Can usually be found for around $25 on ebay. It's a "one piece" pipe that doesn't use a coupler like the savage pipes, but with a little dremeling, you can make the groove on it wide enough for a ziptie to hold it together.

Other than that, make sure your drive train is nice and smooth. Any drag whatsoever will drive up temps. Just make sure everything is tip top and then all you should be fighting is a sunburn. It's drier in vegas than here. Here, when it hits 90F, the humidity is what kills these things. If it's a "dry" day and 90F, my engine temps usually stay below 250F.

wow i just drove outside, it was burning up! my lrp was at 260, pretty safe, but it usually stays around 220 to 240.

Just put some 30% nitro in. All they had was Team Losi Nitrotane but it seemed to work pretty well. The air temp was a few degrees lower than when I ran it last time, but the switch in fuel dropped temps to 230-240. I also bought a better quality plug. It's still considered a medium but the tag said it can "take the heat". The only cold plug they had said it was for a turbo set up, anyone run with one of those?

Next is to get a cold plug and a better pipe, but pockets are empty right now.
