Rules for the American Flag?

Is there a set of rules that governs when the American Flag should be flown at half mast?

The McDs here has had it at half mast for 2 weeks now. I asked them why and they said it was for Katrina.

Is this right, if so, for how long?

no not really, if it is at a Goverment Building then the Governer tells them when to lower the flag and when to raise it. but for every one else their is not rules or anything. But 2 weeks sounds a bit long.

Dont get me wrong their are a lot of Military Rules about a flag but not any that would have a direct influence on this

I know thers rules that pertain to it, but I'm not sure how much its enforced. Theres a Porn store around here thats name was "Pure Pleasure" (That happened to be next to a Kfc, and boths slogans happened to be "Were finger lickin good") Anyway, the city censored the name (Now its called Censored Pleasure) but in retaliation to piss the city off and the govnt. censorship it hung its flag up upside down, and they got a HUGE fine.

yes there are rules, but generally not enforced often. you would have to look them up though cause i dont know them.

And here you go http://suvcw.org/flag.htm as for the porn shop flying the flag upside down I belive that is a sign used to show a fort or encampment under siege. But Ill have to check into that to be sure. So being that the town made them change there name might be construed as a type of seige giving him the right to fly it upside down. But like I said Ill have to look into that more.

Maybe someone in the porn shop had something stuck somewhere. That would be "dire distress". (Can see this being moved to the FFL.) I'll keep the other comments to myself.


I was thinking they only flew the flag half mast for 1 day or so. :shrug:

Flags have been flying here at half mast for a couple weeks now, since the pres ordered that. Have not heard otherwise. Kinda odd, they usually don't give police officers that much respect with flying the flag at half mast, why the f@^* does NO get so much. Usually the flag upside down was associated with a ship in distress or some crazy old guy around here that was doing it last year around election time and ended up getting arrested for it. What it really boils down to is EVERYONE that is a citizen of this country, whether your Democrat, Republican or Indi needs to show respect to the flag, it a symbol of this country's freedom and power. I have a neighbor that put a flag pole and I went off on him cause he had it out at night without lights. Told him if he continues to do it I would put him in a box and send him to Iran or Afganistan or even worse France.
