Not happy with the guy form my lhs and depending on how he treats me next time I go, I may look for another store or just buy everything online.

So, as some of you know, I ripped up some stuff on my mostly stock Maxx and the spur gear was one of them. After looking at different posts and articles, it seemed that the plastic one was the way to go to avoid damage to the cb but the steel one would last longer. So, the guy from the lhs said get the steel and that i would only have a problem if the mesh was screwed up. SO i took the maxx to the store, he had me install the gear and he checked it and said it was fine. I didnt think it was fine myself but he has been at this for...I dont know how long but longer than me. Anyways, long story short, motor was not centered and the spur gear bent the corners of the teeth on one side of the cb and even broke a few.

Now I need a new. What do you guys suggest I get and will I need to replace anything other than the cb?

Running the stock CB against the RRP spur will chew up the CB pretty quickly. I had mine lined up fine with perfect gear mesh and it only lasted a weekend (1/2 gallon) with a 21 converted maxx.

However, I replaced it with a 21 tooth RRP CB and I'm on gallon #2 with minimal wear on both the CB and spur.

If your running a stock maxx (2.5 or smaller), you should be fine with the plastic spurs though. I've been running a plastic spur and a 19 tooth RRP CB on my 18 maxx for about 2 gallons. It finally started to wear pretty bad, so I replaced it with a kimbroagh (spelling?) spur. I ran about 1/2 gallon through it today and the new spur looks like new. I couldn't beleive it. I was beating the crap out of the thing and there is absolutly no wear.

The good thing is, the kimbrough gear is only $1 more than stock.

I heard that when you run metal gears(CB and Spur), make sure that you don't use the same metals. For some reason the metal on metal contact really makes them eat away at eachother especially when they are made out of the same metal.

I've heard both. Like metals make sence to me. One question though, why does a metal cb work with a plastic sg if they are suposed to be the same?

Because a plastic sg is cheap... Also, when you run a bigger gear against a smaller gear, just the fact that it's larger around means it will last longer than a plastic smaller gear. Less revolutions and stress pers square inch.

makes sense [edit] olds

[new]I believe it is steel. If it doesn't strip, and you are happy with the gearing, then I would say it's "OK"

[edit] Doesn't it drive you crazy when a post slides in just before you hit "submit."

And that brings me back to the orig. problem:confused:

See what I mean- quote done while editing.

To prove alluminum, or steel use a maganet. It won't stick to alluminum.

i believe the stock CB is infact steel but is not a hardened steel like the RRP gears

The stock spur is plastic, the stock clutch bell is steel and it isn't hardened. If it is hardened, it's not very hard still.

I ran about another half gallon today, and there still isn't any wear to speak of... just thought I'd let you know how a $4 spur is holding up.
