Hey guys.

Just getting into this hobby of shooting, and finally picked up my first rimfire. It is a Marlin 917v bolt action .17hmr. Has the heavy barrel. Feels nice. Just picked it up yesterday, and my scope came in today (forgot the scope mounts :nono: ). I am really getting anxious to shoot this thing. Already have 750rds just itching to go. I've got a Marlin 982vs on hold for me now (.22mag). Next will be a .22lr Ruger 10/22.

I already have a Marlin .30-30 (model 30A), and a Remington 11-87 12ga. Been shooting about 5 times in the past month. Its more addicting than R/C, to me. :farting:

Definatly very very addictive. I've been shooting skeet alot lately and I can't get enough of it!

That .17 hrm is a sweet round. But be warned, it wont be long before you start wanting to shoot pigeons or crows or something. You will be in heaven when you find a rancher who begs you to shoot his varmints!

The ruger 10/22 is one of the classic guns of all time. Also check out the ruger Mark 2 .22 pistol, its awesome. I took my 10 yo daughter shooting last weekend and she loved the ruger pistol.

I've been skeet shooting a lot too, just now getting into rifles. Just so happened my dad would never take me rifle shooting for some reason. He had the old .30-30 sitting in the closet for 20 years or so. I finally took it out, and cleaned it up. He said "Well, I'm never going to use that thing, so you can have it". I literally went shooting that day. Shooting paper is more fun, to me, than killing animals (especially since I don't like cleaning them). Although, my mom already told me to take care of the squirrel problem on our property (We live out in the country, where discharging firearms is legal, for you in question). Definitly looking forward to collecting. Ammo is expensive. Reminds me of paintball...

I've had a .357 for about 15 years. Never could afford to shoot it much.

Got a .22 Browning Buckmark 5 or 6 years ago and I love it.
I don't hunt, so I never wanted a rifle. Started doing a little research on the 1022 and I had to have one. It's amazing how much you can get for one of these rifles. Didn't do a lot to mine. Stock, barrel, scope and polished the trigger. Got 3 25 rd. clips and the speed loader too.

Figure I'll get another before long. Was a blast building it.
Check out this forum. http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/ Was a lot of help for me. Good luck.

After I get this .22lr, its going to be a mini 14 for me.

My buddy has a few guns, he had some really neat ones back in TX when he was in the Military (auto glock, ar-15, etc) but didn't get to bring them back due to CA law.

Its really amazing how addictive this hobby is already. The weather is starting to get really nice too. Nice going to the outdoor range every weekend and plinking away.

I took my one of my friends out to the range (25yds) and loaded him up with some 3" magnum deer slugs in my 12ga. Dude almost fell over on the first shot. Those things kick pretty good. I can actually get a good group at 50yds (standing). Nice thing is, you can see the hole! And ammo isn't too bad either when you can only take 25 rounds of those things.

I guess you're right Scott. These little bullets are full hollow point (looks pretty deep too), so I'm sure they will pretty much explode on impact. I do not have many pigeons out here, but these little ground squirrels are becoming little bastards. Stealing the horse's food, stealing all of the nuts off of the trees, etc. I will make sure not to shoot em while they are in a tree :hehe: I am about to go to the gun store and pick up a set of scope rings and take this thing to the range!!! It is irritating to have to be this patient!

I have done quite a bit of shooting, long range, and close. Pistol, and Rifle with a fair ammount of shotgunning. i to prefer paper to animals. Just not into killing live things anymore. Among some of my collection is a .308 modified rem700, a barrett .50 (mil model) dont ask hehehe. and several handguns made by wilsons. my prized possessions are a pair of colt .45 autos made by singer sewing machine company during ww2.

Well, I got to shoot the .17hmr yesterday. Great day. It took a little while to sight in the scope, but once that was done, it shot exactly where the dot on the scope was, every time! Impressed me to say the least. I just picked up a .22 magnum today to go along with the .17. I want to be able to switch off when one gets too hot.

I've been building a nice 10/22 myself...
I started witht the RB Precision Evolution stock and I have a stock trigger group / receiver, the 20" Aero barrel, Hornet high speed bolt and a cheapo 9 x 40 scope.....I need some misc. hardware still but I have a local gunsmith helping me do it all right.....I can't wait till it's done, range costs me a freakin fortune since I only shoot .45, 9mm, .40 and .38 rounds......I sold my rifles after the local range stopped allowing anything over .22 rifles.......I had a nice M4 carbine and M1 Socom, I'm sorry I sold them.......

I love my range near here. $40 a year, open 7 days a week, when you are a member (the $40 a year), range is $1 per day, with two free targets. And, tragets are like .50 cents a piece. Cheap day for me when I'm shooting the small stuff.

I used a Cabelas Pine Ridge .17, 3-18x scope. It works pretty good for only being $150.

No yearly fee
7 bucks for unlimited use of one lane
9mm & .38 .......7 to 9 bucks for 50rnds
.40 & .45..........8 to 11.00 bucks for 50rnds
I get targets for free......
I try to "stock up" ammo from shows but then I just go play more and burn through em faster.......Typically I blow about 1000 rounds of various .cal....when it's sitting there from a show with a few 1000 of each it's hard to not go play for a long

I know the feeling of "stocking up" on ammo. If I stock up, then I just have to use it. Kinda like money burning a hole in my pocket.

I don't know, that pretty much explains it... Unless you have a dirty mind!

Cool,

I just picked up a Savage .17, I am hoping the weather holds till I can hit the range. I wont be hunting just being a paper sniper.

Well, I do have a dirty mind, but it's no dirtier than FastEddy's!

So, how did it get that name? I take it "rimfire" isn't a brand of gun, right? Is it a style of shooting? Just looking to learn something new!

A rimfire rifle

A rimfire rifle has a cartridge that has a "charge" loaded in the rim(bottom) of the shell. This is different from a "centerfire" rifle that has an actual primer in the middle if the shell base. Rimfires are cheaper to manufacture and therefore cheaper to buy and shoot with. They are awsome for plinking. Anyway, thats just one difference. Picture the below as perfect circles....

I hope this helps.....
