RC Driving Style
well i got my REVO on the 23rd and broke it in on christmas. I havent really changed the needles at all because it seem to be running good accept for the OVERHEATING! sometimes i will be driving and it will drive very nice with a thick cloud of blue smoke and then itll either start bogging down and running horrible or the motor will smoke i have a HPI temp gun and I've read 300 degrees a few times. i need help tuning my motor, the traxxas was of tuning sounds STUPID (lean the engine 1/16 of a turn until you do not feel any improvement in power and then richen a little) how am i supposed to lean it out when i overheat running very close to factory settings? ps I'm in fl and its around 75-80 right now and I'm running 20% nitro. please help! :ponder2:  :help: :help: :help:

Sounds like you have an air leak. First place to check is the fuel tank o-ring, the one under the cap. That will be the easiest. Next check you exhaust coupler and fuel lines for cracks or splits. Another thing to check since the tank is easy to remove is to take it off leaving the lines connected. Tank empty submerge it in water. Plug one line with you finger and blow into the other, lightly. If you see bubbles you may need a new tank. If none of those work, you probably should pull off the carb and backplate and seal them with red RTV or similar. Stock settings are 4 turns out on the HSN and flush with housing on the LSN in case you want to check those. One more possibility I just thought to check would be your slipper clutch, it could be too loose.

Before panicking further, try these tips:

A) Make sure your tank filler cap is pushed all the way down and sealing.

B) Make sure your carb is snug. There is a small bolt that cinches it on to the block. Make sure it is snug, but DO NOT overtighten.

C) Cut holes in your body. Revo and T-Maxx stock body does not allow enough airflow. If your Revo runs cooler and better with thebody off, this might be your biggest fix.

D) Try leaning your bottom end while richening your top end. Do this in 1/16-1/8th turns. Be sure to make a couple of passes to allow the carb to adjust to the new settings. Check temps with a quality head temp gun/gauge. If not change after a couple of adjustments, go back to where they were.

These are just a few ideas. The 2.5R is a notoriously hot running mill, so itis not too unexpected that you would have temp issues, but the inconsistent running is a little confusing.

it runs good usually but then it will overheat and the motor will start to smoke and i doubt its an airleak cuz the car is new

and i dont know if this helps but i fouled a plug in 24hrs after i changed the one i used for break-in here it is...

That doesn't look fouled to me... That's cleaner than the OS #8 I'm currently running in my revo.

Leaks happen to new and old machines.

Airleaks, improper tuning, drivetrain drag, worn out engines and improper ventilation causes high temps.

Don't ever assume that because it is brand new that nothing can be wrong with it. Airleaks can be there from day one.

It very well could be an airleak, new or not. Also plugs have no given life expectency, they can last one run or one year. You never know. It's common to foul a plug during break in since you usually run so rich. Since Olds mentioned drag, you could have smoked the OWB in the sleazy start and it could be dragging. I ditched mine and went to a starter box.

i tested the tank and theres no leaks in it or the lines, i heard someone metion a wd-40 test and want to know what is that? also people say they use RTV in different place in the motor to stop leaks, where are good spots to use it?

I do not know of any WD-40 test.

As to the RTV question, it is ued only on the carb throat and the backplate. Do a search for instructions on how this is done. It is a little involved to repeat everytime it comes up.

I believe the WD40 test is this:

Start up the engine and spray the WD-40 around areas of the engine where you think the air leak is, if the engine rpm raises, then you know you have a leak.

I do recall hearing that some 2.5R's had a front bearing leak causing problems. You may just want to call Traxxas if the easy stuff doesn't work. Their customer support is excellent and they will do what it takes to make it right.
