Hello! Hoping I can ask for a bit of assistance.

I'm in the midst of a tear-down / clean-up on my Savage and figured now would be a good time to install that reverse module I've had for awhile. Here's my question. Should the idler gear (which was already in the transmission) spin freely on the output shaft? It's not engaging the drive gears and if I spin the spur gear (when it is closed up) nothing moves. Here's a picture of what I am referring to:

The instructions are unclear. It's as if I am missing something that locks the idler gear onto the output shaft.

Thanks in advance for the assistance, I appreciate it!

I looked at the manual online. My first question. Is the idler gear mounted on a hollow shaft right now? And was that shaft on the output shaft of the reverse module when you got it? That's what it looks like it should be in the manual.

It looks like you're supposed to remove the idler from the original shaft and then slip in on the reverse output shaft and secure it with a clip. Does it slide off the output shaft after that????

^ thats exactly what u do
it looksto me like youve removed something from the out put shaft and its still in the gear

That's my confusion. In the blow-up diagram in the image CM posted, it shows to remove the idler gear from the stock output shaft. The reverse module kit comes with a longer shaft. You put the sleeve over the shaft (the highlighted area with the "2" pointing at it), then the gear goes on the shaft, then the "C" clip. That whole thing spins on the shaft freely and I do not see any reference being made to a yoke pin or set screw being used to fix the gear/sleeve combo to the shaft. I thought maybe the sleeve had a OWB type mechanism in it, but no such luck. I'll try to post another picture or two to better illustrate what I'm speaking to.

Yes, that is precisely what happens. The entire gear/sleeve component slides off the shaft.

Hey Monkey, I just thought of something. Try this. Manually shift that thing into reverse and see what happens to the output shaft. I'm thinking that right now it's in forward and the idler gear is supposed to spin freely. But maybe when you shift into reverse there's something that will lock the idler and reverse the gearbox. Maybe?

Gave it a shot, brother. No joy. I think what I'm going to have to do is put it in and try it under power, unless, of course, someone like AC48 WHO JUST PUT ONE IN would chime in! Dude just graduates high school, had a birthday, got a bazillion parts for his "Barbie and Ken Savage X" and then just disappears!

I just think I'm missing a part or something! GRRRR!!!!

You have to change the shaft, the shaft in the module is just there to hold it all together,or maybe it vise versa, it's 2:32am and I can't sleep.Make sure you pay close attention to the 45% thro bracket, put the cover back on then slip the gear on the shaft and put the c clip on. Hope that helps.

Jim

Ps, the gear is on kind of tight
