hi guys new to site and have a question if anyone can help me... i have a redcat tornado with a .18 and it has been ragged out and needs new piston and sleeve...i was thinking that id like to just upgrade the engine to a .28 it has like 3 and a half times the hp... anyways does anyone know if i can do the swap without changing anything? id appriciate any help or suggestions you guys have...thx a lot

I really don't think the rest of the drive train will handle more power. Will most likely break something else if you do put the larger engine in it.
I would either rebuild the .18 or send it back to Redcat. Their warranty will get you a new engine at half price.

Save your money and buy a better r/c with a new engine attached to it! Seriously.
Engine size has little to do with power output.
Engine quality is the key, the other part is quality fuel/pipes/glow plugs and the person tuning the engine.
Bigger is NOT better.
BTW Engine manufactuer's lie like hell about power output. Almost no r/c engine makes 2 h.p.
The average engine makes 1 hp, good engines make 1.5-2 h.p.

thx for the input guys, in that case i think maby ill just replace the piston and sleeve for 40.00 and sell it and try to get some money back out of it for something else thx again!!

well i am not the original owner i found it on craigs list. do u think they would still give me another one at half off?

I put a .25 in a Himoto buggy (basicly same as RedCat). It was fast as hell for 2 laps around the yard....then the whole driveline shelled. Yeah not worth it. But it was fun for that little bit.

I have 3 Redcats and I haven't had to use the warranty yet. It is a lifetime warranty and they claim you can smash the motor and send it in and get another one for half price. You can even upgrade to a larger motor. I am not sure about what all you need to send it back like a receipt or anything. Look for the warranty info on their website www.redcatracing.com

Just FYI
You can buy the .18 motor under the warranty program for 55.00.
Buying used nitro motors is a crap shoot, you never know how they were broken in, if at all. :(

Yeah I wouldn't reccomend it it would crap out your drive train the spur gear is made out of plastic and tons more plastic.

Honestly, that doesn't look like a bad little rig. Seems like redcat is picking up some steam lately with the sales.

If this is the one you have:

I'd suggest figuring out what style of engine it is. I looked at the online manual, but one photo makes it appear to be a standard crank, side exhaust, SLIDE carb and the other makes it appear to be a rotary carb.

Regardless, I'd go with a nice OS18CV-R in that thing:
Rotary carb: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGGP7&P=ML
Slide carb: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGGP6&P=7

Good solid little engine that puts out decent power and will hold a tune all day long. At least with that, you'd end up with a nice quality engine that shouldn't overpower the drive train too much.

Just FYI, they (Redcat Tornado S30) come with an SH .18 (rotary carb, side exhaust) I'm gonna tear mine down tonight or tomorrow and see if I can figure out why it wont stay running. (The air cleaner is junk, and I had it come off numberous times early in it's life and I'm sure it ate at least a little sand, bashin around here on a FL golf course) so now I dont know what I want to do with it.. Its stritctly a basher and there 55$ motor replacement plan is sounding pretty good.. Especially since I have a new 1/8 Truggy (Monsoon) with a .28 in it to mess with.. Just want to have the 1/10 buggy ready incase a buddy comes over or something, or if I want to get squirly with the little bugger.. There pretty fun!!

Actually "Glen Abbey" is the golf course I bash on.. 8th green to be exact, also known as "out in the back yard".. :) You live nearby?? I've not found anywhere to "race" offroad rc around here, besides up in Daytona at the BMX park. But it's only open like once a week or something.. I got out of onroad touring cars because there was nowhere to race.. At least you can take offroad stuff about anywhere.. But I wish they'd open a real track nearby!! (doesn't everyone) :D

Theres one in orange county called orange county paintball it an offroad track you havent been bothered by the golfcourse staff lol?!!!

hehe.. WELL..... :D Yea one day a guy came over and said they were "seeding" the greens and not to run on em'.. But said he didnt care if I ran in the sand traps or fairways, etc.. And theres some large areas in the rough with sand hills.. (but these engines dont like sand much, if ya know what I mean) But yea, l've been stayin off the greens.. I've yet to run the 1/8 truggy out there, so they might run me off for good with that thing. lol. But the little 1/10 buggy didnt seem to freak em out too much, plus I'm only out there just before dusk, so I'm not dodging golfers or anything.. :)
