I've just bought my 3rd new servo and no there not cheap ones and afer one use the servo gradually got weaker until it stoped however it is very hard to spin manually even when switched off, my steering servo has never broken only the throttle/brake
I think the receiver is shorting them out or stuffing them up some how

It's highly unlikely that the RX is shorting just the throttle/brake servo out. You might want to check the linkage for binding and if the servos are digital check the end point adjustment.

What radio/receiver are you using? Are you using a 2.4 set-up? If you are make sure it is NOT on HRS mode (if it has it) if you are using analog servos. It will fry them EVERY time.
