Is it bad that my CB get so hot that it's turning blue? Obviously, it means the clutch shoes are slipping a lot. I'm not sure if it's because the shoes are pretty worn or because of running low speeds inmy backyard. It's a turboslide clutch and I took one of the three springs out since the last time I ran. Wouldn't taking one spring out lessen the amount of resistance to centrifugal force? I thought taking out one spring would allow the shoes to grip better.

is it because the clutch is now engaging earlier and since I was running low speeds it was slipping alot? Iknow I need new shoes... should I replace that 3rd spring?
 
when ever the engine is spinning, the shoe with no spring is engaging, this is the reason there is so much heat build up here
 
Is it an 1/8 scale clutch and what is it on? Or, is it a t-maxx with a 21 jammed in it with a 1/10 sized clutch?

Whats the make of your turbo slide clutch? XTM and GPM are the only two I know that make a slider.

Can you tell if the clutch is engaging at idle? If it isn't, removing the third spring should be ok. When is the last time you sandpapered the surface of the shoes and bell? Glazing causes a lot of slippage.
 
It's my Maxx olds. .26 Outlaw engine. Fioroni clutch setup. I don't think that it's engaging at idle but I'm not positive.. it doens't show any tendency to jump and doesn't sound out of the ordinary so I assume it isn't. I'm running maxx mulchers in my backyard which is mostly sparse grass.. really thin cuz I don't get much sun. It's hard to turn back there w/o rolling over cuz my yard has quite a bit of elevation change. I have to turn slowly with little throttle input to get it turned around. I think with the low rpms and one less spring it's slipping alot at those low (creeping really) speeds.

they DO need replaced but I don't think that's what's making the CB get so hot. I think I need to put the 3rd spring back in it so it engages at a higher rpm. I think only having 2 springs installed is making the clutch engagment too gradual and therefore slips alot before really hooking up... especially during slow takeoffs. I think if I put the last spring in it will engage at a higher rpm but more importantly much quicker.
 
change the shoes when you put the spring back in......it's probably a combination of both making it so hot.....
 
you might want to replace the bearings while you have it off too. Since the CB is getting so hot you probably boiled all of the grease out of them too.

the reason why I say shoes is because they are worn out. On a 1:1 when the clutch wears out it overheats the pressure plate and warps it. the same thing happens on your model truck except that Its not getting to the point of warping it, but heating up more than normal.

on your clutch, i believe that the springs will rub on the clutch bell when the shoes are worn. worn shoes+high rpm=metal to metal contact--->heat
 
its your shoes, the extra spring out has nothing to do with it. the spring being out makes the clutch engage sooner and harder, both reduce wear and heat. the shoes being shot makes them slip, and thats what creates heat. replace your springs when you do the shoes, because if your clutch got that hot it likely fatigued the springs so they will be too weak to hold the new shoes from rubbing at idle, causing the problem all over again.
