Reading Engine Manual... Not clear.

So I was trying to finish breaking in my F4.1, by using the Nitro Star S-25 manual. I was looking at this page, and I'm not too clear what it is saying. Is it ok to run it on the ground on tank 2? (steps 7 to 8). And by tank 3, it's done breaking in? That sounds suspicious to me... But I will be happy to know I'm wrong. :breakdown

i read it that you run it on the ground on the third tank
step 6 says repeat steps 4-6 and if you repeated it it would be tank 2
then you refill and run it on the ground for tank 3 and 4 then i guess it done according to the manual and remember to let it cool a bit between tanks with the piston at BDC

O snap, how important is it for it to be at BDC? I know it is now after tank 3 with after run oil, but I'm not sure about before... :OMG:
 
another member may be able to put it better you have the piston at BDC because the aluminium and the brass cool at different rates and you would lose the engines pinch because the piston wont allow the sleeve to shrink back to its original size also it may seize up.

you usually put after run oil in if you are planning to not use it within about 5 days if its being continually used you shouldn't need to put after run oil in between tanks
 
I don't know about tank 3 being broke in. I think you need alittle more than 3 tanks. I do a min of 10 tanks. and that might be questionable to others also. Some say its not broke into untill at least 1-2 gal. You might want to use the search and get more info on breaking an engine in before you go all out after 3 tanks.
 
You are going to get a lot of different opinions on how many tanks does it take to break in an engine. I myself run anywhere to 6-10 tanks of "initial" break in. I start to see the engine really come to life after a gallon or 1.5 gallons. BUT the common thing you will hear is that after running your engines, you should leave it at BDC Bottom Dead Center to get the most out of your engine. Supercharged said it right. You need to allow the piston and sleeve to cool down at BDC to allow the metal to "shrink" without the piston at TDC or Top Dead Center. You do this and your engine will love you.

What he is asking about is the initial break in, which should be a bit more than three tanks, I usually do 6-10 like jon2 said. The 1-2 gallons is when some engines come to life, but you don't have to break it in for this long. You should be able to have any engine race tuned way before 1 gallon.

On my F4.1, I just did around 6 tanks of breakin, but by my understanding of the manual it does seem to mean 3-4 tanks for break in. Usually I do less tanks with a Savage becuase the tank is so big, but I would do a few more than 4 before you tune it for max performance.
 
I guess it's back to the school parking lot for some low speed, oil-spitting runs. I'm thinking maybe 3 more tanks of this super rich settings; it may take me a while to tune it right.

Thanks for the help guys. I thought the manual was iffy.
