RCNT Video?

Granted, the base idea is awesome, but (and there's always one of these) there are some drawbacks.

First and foremost is a thing called royalties. Since just about every song that can be had is actually owned by a recording label, they'll want a cut. That limits song useage almost completely.

Second, production of videos. This is a time consuming process. All the ones I've done take anywhere from 6 to 12 hours to make (dump to post). The software that I use is full bore editing software, but most people can make solid vids with other progs.

Third, producing the DVD disk. That takes another program called an authoring program. Yes, there are some inexpensive programs out there that will burn DVD's (Nero, Studio 8, and a few others), but most are limited in authoring options (iDVD, Studio 8, etc), and some just plain suck (Nero). The one I want to try is DVD Studio Pro. It, Like Final Cut Pro, is a full bore authoring program. Then there's a limitation on the ammount of video a normal person can fit on a disk. Production DVD's are dual layer, meaning that there is actually two layers of data on a side. Ever see the slight pause while watching a DVD? That's the player switching between layers. Home burners can only fit 60 minutes per side, or 90 minutes at a lower resolution. To get around this, you make a master data file and send it to a DVD producer that has the capability to burn dual layers. This too adds to the cost.

Then there's media cost. The price per disk of a blank DVD is dropping, but with the case, printed material (cover, label, ink), disk, shipping, etc, the cost can be upwards of $3-4 per copy. Then add on royalty per song, and (if it's the case) production costs. That's probably why this hasn't been done by more people. XXX Main, sure, but aren't they backed by a major mag?

Don't get me wrong, I have often considered this same idea, but there's always more to think about than a disk in hand. Maybe someone knows someone that knows what kind of hookup XXX Main has. It may be worth looking into.

Seems like everyone is interested and alot would buy, all we nee dnow is Woodie support, lol. Error your looking rather nice today, would you like to edit a vid, lol.

WEll put error, didnt think about a few of those things. If the DVDs are non profit would that get rid of the record labels or would that still be set up for some royalties.

XXX Main also charges close to $30 a DVD. I've always wondered why they're so expensive.

I don't know for certain, but I'd be willing to bet that the record labels wouldn't give a rats ass if it were for profit or not, they'd still want a cut.

so cut a deal at like .50 cents a dvd and and charge 15 bucks. it only cost like 2 bucks a blank dvd.

I mean personally I dont think something like RCNT DVD would attract any attention of big record labels but then again that puts Woodie and the site at risk.

Like I said, it's worth looking into, but the negotiating between God only knows how many labels could get complicated.

well there is one easy way to side step all of this. Produce the vid and send out the videos to respective members who want to get the video but make sure to ask for a donation but the donation is not "required," but would be greatly appreciated.

Spoken like a Mobster....

I think I could make a video up, I have software that can do it. It wouldnt be too hard, but I wouldnt know what to put, I'd need help with that...

truly, like a mobster.

what about a simple download, no cd's and no soundtrack...
just "donate" 5$ and a get an hour of sweet RCNT vids. that removes all the major money ends of producing a film, and u still get the movie. Besides, the majority of us have a good internet connection, so it is downloadable. Most of us have cd/DVD writers in our computers and if we really want to, we could make a personal copy of the video on a dvd.

well thats my .02 on this great idea

ps the sections could be different downloads- one file for on road, one for mts, ect.

BashMaster i object to that.i got 56k since where i live you can't get cable internet or Dsl(yes Hickvile)

Well, since noone really here has any connections as far as productions, if the interest is present, I could throw the idea by my cousin. He has his own production company. They make/produce CD's (christian music artists) and also edit and produce DVD's for gov't use, small and large companies (promotional videos) and have also done the same for private comapnies, my family business included.

If there is a real interest, here's his URL

It has an indepth description of his work which includes a lot of work with former US presdents. BTW, they're based out of Virginia Beach.

I know that funds are limited so let me know what your concerns are so I can convey them in some kind of oreder. I'll let him know that this would strictly be for a not for profit organization. He would get a cut, right?

Yeah I have business class DSL at both my house and apartment so you could post it up.

Some people could ask someone to make them a copy & send it to them. I wouldnt have a problem sending it to anyone... :)

Just trying to help. :)

:n00bie:

Yup that would be fine too. I was just saying that if they want to go the route like XXX main, then there is a possibility.

Home copies would be fine for me too. Even just a compilation of home movies slightly edited.

Well I agree "sounds" like a great idea but wanted to throw in my few ideas/concerns.

Good news:
It was mentioned about royalties for music but maybe someone on this website is musically talented and could produce some type of music for the DVD.

Bad news:
I would like to mention just allowing people to send in videos might not be the best idea. I realize everyone might have the right mind set behind this, but, there is always the chance that someone could send in movies of someone elses bashing. This would be a bad thing and could cause problems

Just my 2 cents
