RC Plane E-flight SMART setup problem

I just bought a Twin Timber and am trying to bind it to my JR XP8310. I'm not very transmitter savvy so bare with me.
But I set everything up, and everything works except I can't seem to have SAFE stay on. I bind with removing the bind plug before turning on the transmitter and SAFE is on and working as it should when I turn the plane upside down. But the moment I turn the transmitter on, the plane goes back to AS3X. If I turn the transmitter off, SMART activates again.
I'm also having a problem assigning a switch to SMART. Anyone have advise?

I think E flight Horizon birds use Spektrum radios as their main squeezes. It might or might work work completly with your radios. Dunno?
