Does the engine need to be removed on the savage x to change the spur gear? When I slid the engine over the spur gear was hitting on the clutch bell.

-Thanks

I know I have always had to take the engine out to get the spur off. Not really that bad though. Take out the 4 bottom engine mount bolts, pop the ball cup off the throttle and loosen the header mount, engine is off.

Like olds says yes you do, but even if you didn't, if you are putin a diff spur on(different teeths) you would still have to unscrew the engine(4 screws) to get the proper mesh of the spur and the clutchbell.

Why wouldent u just remove that part that the spur gear is on, its only 3 screws and u dont hav to move the engine.

the upper case for the savage x can come off and will bring the spurr with it, as long as you dont change the ammount of teeth, you theoreticaly shouldnt have to re mesh your gears.
i always do tho, would rather spend the extra 20sec to loosen the engine and redo the mesh, then change out spur gears every 10min
