Hey. basicly i will list the questions below, some might seem very obvious but i just wanna be 100% sure before i buy the savage.

1. I'm thinking i might buy the SS kit to build myself. but from what i gather, the kit version does not come with any servos/electrics/reciever? If this is true, i might just buy the RTR version as i would not know which electrics the savage needs.

2. I live in a very hilly/grassy area, so a lot of time i would be driving it around in fields,, I'm just wondering how this would effect performance. Although there are lots of nice gravel roads and also an old dusty quarry i can go to:D

3. How much running time will a full tank give?

4. Would you reccomend i buy a Failsafe unit? how neccesary is this?

5. ok, this one is gonna sound silly- I've noticed the bog standard cars will not go in reverse? how neccasry is it to need to reverse? :dumb: I'm still learning how the engines work!

6. As for running in the engine, i have read a lot about this and there seem to be a lot of differant methods. I think i will just run it through 2 tanks, then ill drive it around very slowly for another 2-3 tanks,, then i will give full throttle and unleash the beast :D after tuning ofcourse, or at what point does the tuning come in?

Thank you for taking the time to read these questions, I'm sure i will think of more soon hehe. I'm looking forward so much to getting the Savage,, looks great fun! i think ill also get the Jeep rangler bodyshell hehe:)

Thanks, Jez.

1. You will need to buy all the electronics if you get the SS kit.
2. Generally grassy will slow an RC down a little. You can still have a great time though. To really see what it can do, the gravel/dirt roads and quarry will be where you will have the most fun.
3. About 8-10 minutes depending on how rich you are running and speed. The more high speed runs, the more fuel is consumed.
4. Buy a failsafe. By the time you realize you should have had one, it will be too late.
5. Reverse is purely personal preference and convenience. There is the added expense of the reverse module and servo. There is also increased rotational mass in the tranny which would hurt performance slightly.
6. Follow the break-in instructions that will come with the mill.

Hope this helps.

Robmob did ya right, can't disagree with anything he posted. Gotta love a savage. Tough and durable and plenty of replacement parts if ya break something.

Excellent, thanks robmob :)

well, i guess ill fork out the extra cash for the RTR and a failsafe. I'm guessing performance wise, the rtr and the ss are exactly the same?

The SS is faster, and the drivetrain is more durable, but after buying the radio equipment it will be more expensive. IMO, go for the SS because it will help you learn about R/C more than hours and hours of reading could, plus it has a bigger engine, which is always good lol.

If you get the SS kit you will need radio equipment. If you want reverse you will need a 3 channel radio and 3 servos, one high torque. If no reverse, just 2 channel radio and one high torque servo for steering.

If you run Spektrum, there is a built in Failsafe when you bind the TX and the RX together.. That may save a couple bucks for you depending on what type Spektrum system you choose.

I run spektrum dx 2.0 on my revo soon to go on my savage
and when I test the fail safe it just taps the break then go like 3/4 throttle always has for some reason:(....
If i were you I would still run a fail safe! Can never be to safe!

ok thats made me think, i would like the ss if its more powerfull, and i would like to learn exactly how it goes together, but is it pretty hard to build for a noob like me hehe? also, I've just calculated a rough price of everything i would need, and i dont think i can afford the ss. I'm not sure wether to wait, or get the rtr now and upgrade it in the future:).

Thanks guys for your help, much appreciated:)

If you have some mechanical ability and can read assembly diagrams/instructions,the kit won't be too bad and you will gian invaluable knowledge when it comes time for repairs.

I run my Savage in the grass a lot, it is a bit slower but also the added forward resistance gives me more wheelies, if you like that sort of thing.

I average 15 min. run time per tank of fuel but I still run the 25 engine.

No failsafe on my truck, haven't had a problem in the year+ I've run it but my Traxxas Nitro Sport had to have one, lots of problems with it for some reason. To be safe, get one.

If you just bash a lot, a reverse can be useful, if you race you usually aren't allowed to have/use it.

Break-in is everything for these engines, do it right!

Good luck and ENJOY!!!!
Randy

The SS has a higher performance engine, and tuned pipe as well. Though the RTR now comes with a .28, its certainly not weak. They really aren't that hard to build, the hardest parts (the tranny and diffs) are already prebuilt in savage kits too.

I dissagree about the reverse module. there will be no more rotational mass and it will not hurt the performance, just take a module apart and you will see why i say this. Also if you go with the RTR you can always upgrade to the reverse module later on even though you have a 2ch radio, HPI makes a mixer for just that. if you were to go with a kit you don't have to go all the way to spectrum to have a built in Failsafe... my Futaba 3pm in HRS mode has built in for all 3 channels. if you want power and don't want to have to buy the electronics just go with the X SS RTR.

ok, thanks everyone:D, ill keep you updated and let you know what my final decision is.

Actually, i might be able to save some money and use the old 2 channel Futaba Attack digital T2DR radio and reciever, which i got with the traxxas stampede about 10 years ago. If that will work?, then what exaclty will i need to buy to get the SS up and running.

would i need the following:

A. http://www.modelsport.co.uk/?CallFunction=ShowSpecification&ItemID=16910 - Servo for steering
B. http://www.modelsport.co.uk/?CallFunction=ShowSpecification&ItemID=18576 - starter kit
C. Some fuel:P

I'm hoping my old radio will work, it would save money which is always good.

I would recommend something with a little more torque than that servo. The HS-645MG is a good servo for a savage.

Well, i finally decided to get the X ss,, I'm really looking forward to building it and seeing it up and running:) Just a couple quik questions>
I'm guessing ill need to buy some grease, threadlock, afterrun oil, airfilter oil, and also some Shock oil.
What is a good shock oil to use? at the moment i have chosen some 20w
http://www.modelsport.co.uk/?CallFunction=ShowSpecification&ItemID=11622
will 20w be ok? I've no idea which kind of shock oil i need. I'm guessing, 10w is the lightest oil and anything above is heavier?

I would recommend going very heavy on the shock oil. IMO the thicker the better.....I seem to roll less with heavy oil in the shocks. The kits comes with a small tube of grease and thread lock too. So if you don't want to buy it all now you can wait and get more as you need. Have fun building yours....I have the same truck....good times mate. Cheers

The kit will come with all of the lubricants you will need to get it going. IMO you should use what comes with it and if you don't like it you can change it later. You will need the after run oil.

You will also need:

fuel
extra glow plugs...at least two.
glow ignitor
batteries
tuning screw driver (small flat head or slotted screw driver)

Thats all I can think of right now....I'm sure there is more but I've been away for too long and can't think anymore
