how bad does it hurt and engine if you let it set for a year without any after run oil in it?

thats not a good thing...i talked to a guy at the LHS who forgot to add ARO to his engine. After 2 months the carb was sticking.

Did yours sit for a year without ARO?

I'd take it apart and check the internals. Tear the carb apart, take the crank, piston, sleeve and conrod out. Clean all with alchohol, clean main bearings, lube everything really well with light oil or ARO, then hope.

If there isn't to much rust build up on the crank and moving internals, it should be ok. But if rust is present, you can try cleaning it off, but be gentle and don't use grinding wheels. More like a wire wheel on a dremel at a slow speed.

I wouldn't run it without doing a thourough cleaning and inspection.

I had my OS 21 RG in a baggy for 6 months. Granted, I used ARO, but it started on the 2nd pull. I didn't do anything but take it out of the ziplock, install, start.

i took the head of and it does not seem to have any rust at all...before i parked it it did not even have a tank of fuel ran through it....would that have made a differance?

So, it was a brand new engine? That would make a difference, but not much. An engine that isn't stored with a good amount of oil in it (new or used) will rust in time. Most new engines though have a good coat of oil on the internals as well.

If you leave your engine for a very long time without putting your afterburn oil in it, you engine is still ok, just take the cooling head off, get a napkin (not a tissue) and while the piston is at the BDC (bottom of the chamber) wipe everything cleen. take the air filter off and wipe all in there too. It should be fine.

The reason to putting afterburn oil in the piston is that the old fuel turns into this gunky bad stuff after awile, and would stop your engine from starting up. wiping it cleen will take care of it.
