Well, I have a new one ready to install b/c the original lost some of its teeth. My question is what is the best way to change it out? Do I need to unscrew the tranny, or is it easier to remove the engine? It appears that one or the other is gonna have to be moved in order to get the old spur gear off and the new one on.

The easiest way is to pull off your engine. Taking out the tranny would be 3X as much work.

It's easier if you pull the fuel tank, but I don't think it's necessary. I'm guessing this is on a stock maxx?

I only had a stock maxx for about 2 weeks, and that was 8 months ago, so I really don't remember. With a 21 conversion, a few more things are in the way.

The best path is to remove the engine. This will save you having to do so when you have to reset the mesh. Both already mentioned above.

loosen the engine screws so it slides. thn tke off the tank and then you can do it. or do what i tried... take off the clutch with th engine on.... not too easy.
