is the one way bearing crucial to the running of the motor, or is it just for start-up??

It is primarily for start up so the engine gets cranked in the proper direction and keeps moving in that proper direction.

Your next question is going to be "You mean these things can spin backwards?" or something along those lines. The answer there is YES. While the porting and timing of said porting is set for the engine cranking in the right direction, if you manage to get the engine going in the reverse it will fire and run but give some less than optimal performance.

So, the one way bearing is kind of a small but important part.

Curious to why you ask? If it's about shot, get a new one. Keep in mind, when your engine is running (6000RPM's - 40000RPMS), that one way is a bearing that is spinning. If it's failing on you, do you really want a $20 part to lock up when your engine is cranking at 30,000 RPM's? That would damage a lot of stuff.

My old time glow plane always started backwards. Its amazing they can run that way, but that is a 2 cycle engine principal. Also why superchargers don't work!!
