:trashed: Alright. i bought this used savage last week. I'm new to the hobby. The guy before me replaced the roto start with a pull cord and pretty much great except for minor scratches here and there but what can you do. anyways i am trying to start it and after i pull the cord to prime it up and then open the trottle and then put the glow plug igniter on and try to start it. After I pull the cord a couple times it sounds like there isn't anything going on inside. then after messin with it for 20 seconds or so it seems to get back on track and try to start. Any suggestions???

Sounds like your one way bearing may be slipping.

You are going to need to remove the pull-start and clean the one-way. It is easiest to do with the mill out of the chassis. If you can get at the screws while it is still mounted then give it a try that way. Be sure to note which way the one-way was on the shaft so you re-install it the right way.

yea i think I'm going to have to take off the roll cage and take the engine off and then take the pull start off. Is a mill the engine? i konw a noob question

The mill is the engine.

Sounds like the OWB.

Take the engine off the chassis (4 bolts, a header spring, carb ball link and fuel line), take off the pullstart housing, take out the OWB (one way bearing), soak it in alchohol for a few minutes, thread a paper towel through it and spin it on the towel until it's clean, re-install and try again. 20 minute job.

man i aprreciate the step by step instructions. very very helpful. I would of figured it out i think bc i was lookin at what it would take to get off and not too hard but i just want to double check with people that have done it before.... or ill just start screwing stuff up

Read this article. It will familiarize you with the pull-start assembly and show you the one-way.

thanks again. I'm use to replacing pull starters on lawn mowers so i figure this can't be too too much different.

alright well i cleaned it out and looks like i fixed it. we'll have to see tom....i'll let you all know. Thanks for all your help

Be sure not to over prime it. Only prime it until you see the fuel reach the carb then stop, install the igniter and proceed to try and start it. Don't let it fill the crank case with fuel. This sometimes will cause the one way to slip on the shaft. My LST does it and it sounds like you are having the same issue.

thanks again rob. so i got it running today. there is a problem with the richness of the fuel but I'm working that out as you are prob reading this. Well off to the jumps.

Glad to hear you got it sorted out.

Keep in mind that if you do replace the OWB, you should replace the shaft it spins on as well. A worn shaft will destroy a $20 OWB in a matter of a few runs.

If your having tuning issues, try this. That should help.
