For the chrome bumpers, you can use Spaz stix mirror chrome, they even make it in a rattle can if you don't have an air brush, then back it with black. So depending on what color you go with for the main body color will determine if you need to do the bumpers first or not, although I would recommend you do them first no matter what color you go with, as chrome will show any and all residue left behind from your masking, so better to do it first masking off the rest of the lid.
 
I would use just one very light coat of the chrome and backing it with black. I also used the chrome to emulate the chrome strips on the original.
