HI there... any of you that havent seen my posts in this forum in the last few days... or in revo or introduction... my names tracey I'm a 23 yr old mum living in Adelaide, Australia... and I'm about to start a rebuild on my partners dead TMAXX... until last week id never really had anything to do with rc's... so this is a big project i know... but this is the just the beginning... with some help ( or lots of it) from all of you I'm going to achieve this... it may take months... but ill get there... today is officially day one... and now i dont really know where to start... I've sourced out some of the parts i need and am waiting for some others to arrive... so i think I'm going to start by taking it apart and cleaning it up and finding out what actually needs replacing!!! wish me luck!! hope to see you all here often! Tracey xxx (these are the t maxx now.. before I've done anything... ill update the photos as i go.. thanks again..

Great to see you getting involved in R/C. I'll keep watching this thread for updates,I love projects

I'm trying to toot my own horn, but HERE is a build I did a while back. Some of the pics may be gone, but you can see the process I went through to build a Maxx.

Ahh very nice, I'm going to have a rs4 project comin in a couple days, but welcome to the hobby :)

day 1

so i pulled most of it apart I've just got the trans still on and the servos cos I've got to go back to work and didnt want to rush it otherwise i might not remember how to put it back together! hahaha! how do i tell whats fu*^ed other than the head which you can see in the blurry pic!! had to turn the flash off but then it didnt focus... what do i use to clean everything up??
Racer... had a look at your project caryou did for your son... looks fantastic!! bet the little guy was stoked with that!!! anyway here are the before and after photos of the tmaxx... had to remove and resize my photos cos I'm still getting used to the forum and id overloaded my atatchment limit already??? will keep woking on it tonight when i get home anyway... speak to you all later... I think i did pretty well for a fiorst timer!! Tracey xxx

First thing I usually always do is make sure I've got a notebook a pen with tons of ink in it for notes, diagrams, etc. I'm constantly writing stuff down. Sounds Luke you're having fun here. I love tinkering with my Tmaxx. Sometimes I want to purposely break something so I have a reason to tear it down. LOL. Anyway, you could use Wd40 to clean a lot of your parts with. Or just nitro fuel. Hot soapy water on chassis parts, shock towers, bulkheads, anything really. Simple Green works great too. I usually try to put all my nuts n bolts back into the part they came out of then set that aside. Example; if I took my motor and fuel tank off, the 4 screws that hold "each" of these on, I would screw halfway back into the holes and set the motor/tank aside for further cleaning later. Good luck with your project. I'm sure you'll get tons of help on here. I already have. This site and the people in it are great.

Sell It!! and buy a revo roller. Then use the money your gonna put into this to get a 3.3..
Just my .02 :)

The tmaxx is fun to build. Spend some time on the tear down.. if you wanna do it right. Go through the whole thing, every part and it'll be like new. A stainless steel screw kit isn't a bad idea either.Hopefully you have enough spare parts.... and not have to search eBay every week (i kinda enjoy:p) for parts.. shiny aluminum:second_place: ones of coarse.

My current build.

day 2

so.. bought a revo roller today with everything but the motor... manual and radio and everything for 100 bucks... was pretty stoked with that so now my partner has a parts car for his revo... thought it was pretty funny when i read your comment blu.... but I'm adamant that I'm still doing the tmaxx... even Steve ( my partner) tried to convince me it would be easier to just whack a 3.3 in the revo roller and I've got a running rc.... but its not about the ease... i want to build the t maxx... will upload photos later in the day once I've worked on it for a bit... can i use metho or turps to clean up any bits??? someone said de natured alcohol??? is that metho??? thanks for all your help guys!! Tracey:)

all cleaned up nowhere to go....

So the TMAXX is all cleaned up...:D... now to check all the parts n see what i need to replace...... but i have no idea what I'm doing and am thinking that i may actually be in over my head here... oh o...:\... i have a chassis, four tyres and thirty sealed and numbered ziploc bags!!! now what??
i think I'm screwed... haha...:whhooo:....I've externally cleaned all the parts.... but please can someone tell me exactly what i need to do before i can think about putting it back togethor... ???:(

maybe i didnt word that exactly right... physically i can put it back togethor.... but to put it back togethor and have it work is completely
different,,,

I'd start with the.tranny. in my opinion. Then all the reciever wiring. Be sure not to "pinch" any wires. Turn all screws easy as to not strip them out. Patience is a;virtue here. The more time you take, the better the result.;)

If you are going through all this trouble already you may as well tear the tranny apart and inspect all the gears inside as well...

.if you haven't found the exploded views yet check these out

yuo may as well go all out and clean every nut bolt screw in the thing at this point...yes a SS screw kit will make your life a lot easier.....if you haven't done it yet get a good quality allen wrench set (NOT A CHEAPO SET FROM WALMART or whatever discount stores are in aussieland)....Integy has a good set for about 20 bucks....the wrenches are what usually strip out the SS screws so a good set is very important to your sanity in this hobby.....cleaning plastic w/ Denatured Alcohol is ok when it's all together adn you are doing a quick clean job...but simple greem or soapy water works great if you have the rig in pieces already....I take the plastic parts after I scrub them and let them soak in a silicone lubricant to keep the plastics from drying out too much from the cleaners.....
tear your shocks apart adn rebuild them as well...Diffs too....ICU said it best the more time you take the better off you will be in the end....

have fun, this is a hobby and not a necessity....don't force anything....all of your linkages should be free moving when they aren't connected to their shocks or servos.....nothing should bind at all......get some blue Loc-Tite and use it on all the screws.....other than that it's all on you and your aility to inspect the part for small cracks and / or excessive stress.....I'd get the RPM arms and carriers if you can, they make the truck alot stronger...

thanks

thanks for the info fish... downloaded and saved all the pdfs to my desktop for easy reference... where do i get the ss screw kit from??? and should they all be hex screws on my tmaxx?? they pretty much all are on my partners revo but the t maxx is pretty much all phillips and slotted head??

+10 on loc-tite for screws. I got my ss screw set off ebay and havent had any problems yet. I haven't done the FOC on my maxx's, but all i hear is good news about it. I'm probably gonna do this soon.

Ziploc bags are good if it all you got.. I've always used a couple fishing tackle containers with the dividers and there clear. I have one for general screws, one for tear-down screws, one for random chassis parts or oils. Helps get everything into a three containers. The dividers get everything organized.

Tranny Day

hey there... sorry i havent been around in a few days... worked three 12 hours shifts in a row and was too buggered to touch the t maxx after work... off work this morning cos my little guy is not feeling well at all... so i have the time to do it while hes sleeping,,, any major do's or don'ts with the tranny ??? an y help would be greatly appreciated...:)

Yea, jump in there and check your gears. Check to see if they are stripped or nice n Sharp lile they should be. If i were you, id rip the reverse out and, install foc. It lightens the truck up a bit, and you get way better acceleration and speed. Other than that, you should be good to go.:)

revere or no reverse??

hey there icu... other than weight are there any other pros and cons about doing the foc?? does that mean i actually will have no reverse?? i think i might need it lol... I've never even driven the truck... hahaha....

The only pros of having reverse IMO is for new drivers that get into some bad spots and then can back out. Other than that it's just a neat novelty.
The pros of the FOC are the internal rotational weight savings that will allow more power to the wheels. Also it will eliminate the internal clutch that makes it jerky/twitchy at idle and on light acceleration. You also save the weight of the extra servo and linkage. A lot less headaches too,the Maxx reverse can be tricky to get functional,I was never satisfied with it on mine.
You'll learn to drive better/faster without the reverse because you'll get tired of having to run over and get it free from whatever hazard you ran into
