i got a e-rusty, basicaly all stock. i put a new traxxas stinger 20 turn motor on it. 81t spur. 22t pinion. it drives fine (from what i can tell, only my second electric truck) the problem I'm having is not even half a battery and the motor and esc are WAY hot! like i can see a bit of smoke comming out of it. i let it cool the cleaned it out with some carb cleaner, but it wasn't that dirty (its only been ran about 3 batts worth) i did a "breakin" by running it in some water for about 30 seconds, then drying it out and running it on an almost dead battery for a few minutes. (best i could do i dont have all the cool electric stuff.)

what could be causing the heat? is it a bad motor? (remember its brand new) is the gearing to steep? (i dont know what is stock)

anyone have a rusty that can giv me some insight?? thanks!!

Is your gear lash set too tight? How about a drop of oil on the bushings/bearings? Next thing to check is, how about the transmission? Does it spin freely?

Do the rear wheels spin freely?

Just a hair of binding is enough to cause the heat that you described.

lash was good, i wd40ed both ends after i dried it out. trans spins freely so do wheels. doesn't pull ether....

I'm stumped.

I would say your over geared. I think the stock gearing is 18/84. The stock pinion is 18 but I'm not positive about the spur.

thanks.. i guess thats the prob.. now i gotta figure out wether i wanna go new gear or new motor...

Yup, I'd say you're geared WAY too tall on that motor. Generally, you want to drop about a tooth every two winds down (at least, thats' been my theory). An 18 sounds about perfect on that motor. I'd try that before replacing the motor. You never know; it might surprise you.

if i drop the pinion I'm still running a 81 spur. will that be to high?

If all moving parts in the tranny spin free, and all is smooth. To tall gearing is almost always the cause of high motor/ESC temps.

Get a smaller pinion.22t pionion now,get one around 14-15t.

Unless you installed some crazy mad monster truck wheels on sone adapters you should be fine.

you might want to take the motor apart and clean that comm up a little too, a nice eraser should clean it up...and yes it sounds like it is way over geared like the others said, the mod motrs need the low gearing to get those RPM's up.

Either way you will need to get a new pinion. If you keep the stinger I would suggest a 17t and keep you 81t spur. If you go with a mod motor you would most likely have to get a smaller pinion. Don't forget these gears are 48p.
