:angry:hi, i own a new savage 4.6, and i take very good care of my trucks, but i recently bought a used savage .25 from the hobbyshop, my problems have been many from eating spur gears to every bearing in the thing needing replaced, i thought i finally got it back in good shape and now the servo and the clutch need replaced, i have put over $150.00 replacing parts so far not including the parts it needs now, so whats your thoughts on buying a used nitro r/c? i bought mine from a hobby shop cause i didn't want to run my 4.6 this winter. i also own a t-maxx3.3, a nitro stampede and a rtr3,EVO hpi 67 corvette, all great but i bought them all new, so should i stay away from used nitro r/c vehicles even if its the hobby shop selling them? please comment. kdogg

Well, i paid $150.00 for it but i figured since it came from the hobby shop it was ok, WRONG. Man, i coulda bought a new 4.6 for a few extra bucks and i still have to spend at least another $50.00 on the servo and the clutch. it's almnost like someone owned this thing and purposely tried to run it to death, another problem i'm having is it's a pull start and its a real bear to start the first time, i've charged the glow ignitor until it's really hot, changed the glow plug, and it's still hard to start the first time, but then when it does start it smokes like it's on fire, WHAT DO YOU THINK? motor need a overhaul, maybe, PLEASE RESPOND kdogg1966

That means the engines in good shape. Pretty new actually. Loosen the glow plug before you crank it up. Tighten it as soon as it starts. Heat the block with a hair dryer.

ok, thanks maybe in the future i'll only buy a used r'c if i know an adult has owned it, or maybe i'll just buy them new from now on. kdogg

I prefer to buy new... It only takes a few extra $$ and I don't have to deal with someone else's problems... :D

I dont mind buying used. If it wasn't for people selling them used I prob would have never got my first savage. Wife could not see me speending 400 to 500 on what she calls a toy. But when I found a Savage 25 and a nitro rustler for 200 bucks, it was a go. Yes I had to work on them, but being new to the hobby I think that really helped me get my feet wet with really understanding nitro's and how to work on them.

I’ve bought both new and used.
Like yours, the first used one cost me time and far too much money to repair.
I would have been better off buying a new one.
I don’t mind spending the time. I also know that some repairs will occur and any upgrades I want to add are going to affect the ultimate cost, but this one had a lot more issues than was worth it.

Lesson learned, I’m far more selective when I’m looking to pick up a used one.
PS - My winter project is a used roller New Era 1/6 Savage chassis that I found on eBay. :)

well, i'm hoping that after i get all the bugs out of it, then i can bash on it some this winter. But the problem is that every time i fix something, then something else breaks. I sure hope that after i replace the servo and the clutch, then maybe then i can enjoy it. so far i've had to replace all the bearings, the gas tank, the spur gear,( it ate 6 before i found the cracked motor mount.) a motor mount, the carb, found a used one from the hobbyshop. all the fuel lines, 1 drive shaft. now a clutch and a new servo. I'M STARTING TO THINK MAYBE SATAN OWNED THIS THING BEFORE. kdogg

That sounds like maintenance to me. That stuff isn't a big deal. Do you have a rechargeable rx pack? The batteries could be your servo problems.

yes, but the other day i was driving it and when i tried to turn to the left, the thing would not cut the wheels so i turned it off and i could hear the servo making a gear stripping sound, and the clutch is shot but i agree it's maintainence but it would have been nice if the previous owner did something other than just run it to death. i believe in maintaining my trucks, and i will get this thing straightened out. but in the future i'll only buy a used r/c if i know its been adult owned and properly maintained. just my thoughts. what are yours?

Now you know what to look for when you buy used. A lot of people will lie. When i bought my Jammin truggy used off E-Bay from a guy with 700+ transactions and 100% pos. feedback I thought I got a good deal. Turned out all he did was run it too death, spray it down with WD-40 and blow it off. It LOOKED clean, but it was horribly maintained. The guy claimed to be a pro racer....he had diff shims pinched between the rear housing, fluids where black goo full of dirt. It was barely worth saving. He claimed it had new bearings too....I had to replace everyone of them. I left him good feedback before I tore it down. Mistake!
I'll still buy used but i check everything hands on first unless it is someone I know and trust. There is quite a few guys on here I will not hesitate to buy from, they are on the same page as I am mechanically.

The one good thing is my local hobby shop is allways willing to work on my trucks and he only charges me for the parts, no labor. He says the reason is that if people are willing to buy stuff from him, new or used, then he's more than happy to work on them and plus he says it's fun for him. I don't know how many hobbyshops are like that but I really feel lucky to have a friend like Tony at Danville Hobby. That's in danville West Virginia, i live about 30 mins. away and my son and I generally make a day of it since there's a Dairy Queen very close, if you're ever in Danville West Virginia stop in and say hi to Tony. Oh yes, and check out the local Dairy Queen! kdogg1966

You are very lucky, support that hobby shop. Mine would charge people for browsing if he could. I spent a lot of my personal time and money promoting the hobby shop when it was new. I received nothing but overpriced parts in return.

Well, i didn't know much about the hobby when i met tony (my lhs). he's very good to explain things to me like when you buy a r/c, you're gonna break things. So buy a brand that you can get parts for. I was pretty naive, i thought if i was careful that i wouldn't break things, WRONG, I ran my savage x into my neighbors steps doing about 40mph. Boy was I heartbroken but Tony had all the necessary parts in stock and i was up and running that evening. That's the reason I own traxxas and hpi. CAUSE BEING ABLE TO GET PARTS IS EVERYTHING. Have you had any experience with himoto? my friends son has one and he's having trouble getting parts for it? kdogg
